Top 10 Doctor Who Companions

There is no show as diverse and imaginative as Doctor Who. The show follows the Doctor, an alien called a Time Lord with an exceptional mind and a spacecraft called the Tardis that can travel across time and space, who often engages in daring discoveries, missions as small as saving one life to saving all of creation, and taking on some of the universes worst. Despite his awesomeness, he can’t do it alone and the Doctor’s shared the spotlight with a lot of companions of the many years and different incarnations. Let’s take a look at ten of the greatest companions to stand by the Doctor.

(10) Peri Brown

Peri was a fun and adventurous character, a botany student from America that helped change the dynamic of the companions of the series. Over the course of her run she’s definitely proved herself a loyal friend of the Doctor.

(9) Romana I

Although initially icy, Romanadvoratrelundar was a Timelady assigned to the Fourth Doctor by the White Guardian to find the pieces of the Key To Time. It’s great seeing the smartest guy in the room matching wits with a woman as smart as and perhaps even smarter than him. Yes, in the beginning there was some tension between the two but as the series progresses we see a fun side to Romana and the respect that forms between the two.

(8) Clara Oswald

Clara definitely was an interesting character. We see her several times throughout the series in different incarnations, each in a point of time that helped the Doctor, including the first Doctor which she urged him to take the TARDIS. Clara was interesting but a bit flat in the beginning. However, her time as a companion gave us a nice, charming personality that grew in confidence, which helped to balance the Doctor’s more serious demeanor.

(7) Donna Noble

Of all the companions, no one could spit fire like Donna Noble. Donna definitely has the fiery personality that counters the Doctor’s wit. Although initially loud and obnoxious, we get to see the real Donna during her travels with the Doctor and the rise of their friendship. True, she and the Doctor have a lot of comedic moments but also Donna’s surprising deep with a empathetic side that made for some of the most moving moments. Unfortunately, Donna’s send off was quite sad with her memories of her time with the Doctor erased to save her life. Despite her ending, we still enjoy remembering the Doctor and her antics fondly.

(6) Ryan Sinclair

Introduced in the eleventh season, Ryan appears as one of three new companions. At the beginning of the season he’s struggling with the loss of his Nan, a disability called dyspraxia that affects his motor skills, and his relationship with his grandfather, Graham. His emotional journey throughout the series as well as the adventures with the Doctor have made him a more mature, brave individual.

(5) Jo Grant

Jo proved herself to be a valuable asset not only against the Doctor’s enemies but also saving him from himself. Smart and beautiful, she got a good send off (though we could see that the Doctor did take the departure pretty hard).

(4) Martha Jones

Martha had pretty big shoes to feel after the departure of everyone’s favorite companion, Rose Tyler. However, Martha has definitely come into her own, striking on a different path becoming a proactive member of UNIT and Torchwood to help protect the universe. She’s not only beautiful but brave and brilliant, and although it was sad to see she had feelings for the Doctor (which he didn’t reciprocate) she’s used her feelings and experiences to continue the fight.

(3) Amelia “Amy” Pond

Amy’s time with the Doctor stood out because of how intertwined her life was to his. Amy meets the Doctor after his regeneration into the Eleventh Doctor. Amy comes off as feisty but she has a lot of heart and it’s great seeing her relationship with the Doctor grow as well as her relationship with her friend and lover, Rory Williams. Her time with the Doctor isn’t just their story but the story of her life from a little girl to a capable woman.

(2) River Song

River is one of the best characters of the series. Introduced in the Tenth Doctor’s era, she’s a time traveler much like the Doctor, who’s important to the Doctor’s future, which she’s already lived in her past. Smart, feisty, and just as brilliant as her husband (The Doctor), River’s every scene is infused with mystique as we don’t always fully know what she’s thinking or what she’s planning. If the Doctor is Sherlock Holmes, then River is Irene Adler.

(1) Rose Tyler

If you ask any Doctor Who fan who’re their favorite Doctor Who characters are, you’d be hard pressed to find one without Rose Tyler on it. The brilliant, beautiful girl next door, Rose started off as a regular young lady, who came into contact with the Doctor which kicks off the revival series. Perhaps one of the best personal stories of the entire series revolves around Rose and David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor relationship. And also, her transformation from an innocent young lady to an accomplished, brave, and brilliant woman.
