Boys aren’t the only heroes of stories. Girls have stepped up to the plate and have shown themselves to be just as capable to fight bad guy butt. Especially for the last few decades. There are tons of magical girl anime. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen that many. But this is a list of my five favorite ones.

(1) Kill la Kill (2013-2014)

The series follows vagrant schoolgirl Ryuko Matoi on her search for her father’s killer which brings her into violent conflict with Satsuki Kiryuin, the iron-willed student council president of Honnouji Academy, and her mother Ragyo Kiryuin’s fashion empire. Ryuko, Satsuki, and others obtain martial arts superpowers from their clothes, which appear to have a will of their own.

(2) Sailor Moon (1992-1997)

The series follows the adventures of a schoolgirl named Usagi Tsukino as she transforms into Sailor Moon to search for a magical artifact, the “Legendary Silver Crystal”. She leads a group of comrades, the Sailor Soldiers, called Sailor Guardians in later editions, as they battle against villains to prevent the theft of the Silver Crystal and the destruction of the Solar System.

(3) Yuki Yuna is a Hero (2014)

The story follows members of the Middle School Hero Club, Yuna, Mimori, Karin, Fu and Itsukim who find themselves encountering mysterious monsters known as Vertex who seek to destroy the Shinju (Divine Tree). Yuna and her friends gain magical powers becoming heroes to protect the world from destruction.

(4) Cardcaptor Sakura (1998-2000)

The story centers on Sakura Kinomoto, an elementary school student who discovers magical powers after accidentally freeing a set of magical cards into the world; she must retrieve the cards to prevent catastrophe. Each of these cards grants different magical powers, and can only be activated by someone with inherent magical abilities.

(5) Magic Knight Rayearth (1997)

Magic Knight Rayearth focuses on three eighth-grade girls: the tomboyish, headstrong but short Hikaru Shidou; the quick-tempered and no-nonsense only child Umi Ryuuzaki; and the intelligent and ladylike Fuu Hououji find themselves drawn into another world, Cephiro. The girls are then tasked with rescuing the current Pillar, Princess Emeraude, from her abductor, the high priest and antagonist Zagato, after which they will be returned to Tokyo.
