Top 30 Fantasy Re-Reads

Here’s a list of some of our favorite fantasy books that we’ve re-read or plan to re-read.

(1) The Approaching Storm by Alan Dean Foster in 2002

The story follows Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker as they are sent to a planet to settle a dispute as growing unrest threatens the Galactic Republic’s stability.


(2) A Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire Book 3) by George R.R. Martin in 2000

A Storm of Swords picks up with The Seven Kingdoms of Westeros still in the grip of the War of the Five Kings, a large host of wildlings, the tribes from beyond the Seven Kingdoms’ northern border, approach the Wall that marks the border, and Daenerys Targaryen, the daughter of a deposed former king of Westeros and “mother” of the world’s only living dragons, sails west, planning to retake her late father’s throne.


(3) Street Magic (The Circle Opens Book 2) by Tamora Pierce in 2001

Describes the further adventures of child-mage Briar Moss in his travels with his teacher, the Dedicate Initiate Rosethorn.


(4) Bewitching the Enemy (Vieux Carré Witch Sister Book 1) by Dawn Chartier in 2014

The plot follows protagonist Storm Morgeaux who discovers that she is a Witch and the bond she has with a Paladin named Nate, who must choose between protecting her or killing her.


(5) The Elves of Cintra (Genesis of Shannara Book 2) by Terry Brooks in 2008

The story follows a hero who flees Seattle with a group of orphaned street kids, while another leads a group to the Oregon wilderness to meet the long-hidden Elves of Cintra.


(6) Crewel Lye: A Caustic Yarn (Xanth Book 8) by Piers Anthony in 1984

The story follows a Castle Roogna’s ghost, Jordan the Barbarian, who tells Princess Ivy his story of betrayal and death via the magical medium of the Tapestry.


(7) Blood of Elves (The Witcher Book 3) by Andrzej Sapkowski in 1994

When the Empire of Nilfgaard attacks the Kingdom of Cintra, Ciri, granddaughter of Queen Calanthe, manages to flee the capital city. The Emperor of Nilfgaard sends his spies to find her, hoping to harness her magical potential and the elven blood in her veins. Enter Geralt of Rivia. A monster hunter for hire, he’s keeping Ciri safe at the Witchers’ keep, Kaer Morhen. But with the Emperor’s spies closing in, how long can Geralt keep Ciri hidden away?


(8) A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire Book 1) by George R.R. Martin in 1996

A Game of Thrones follows Ned Stark who becomes Hand of the King to Robert Baratheon, Ned’s bastard son Jon Snow joins the Night’s Watch, an ancient order sworn to defend Westeros by maintaining the Wall, and the exiled Viserys Targaryen marries his sister, Daenerys, off to Dothraki warlord Khal Drogo in exchange for an army to take back Westeros.


(9) Storm Front (The Dresden Files Book 1) by Jim Butcher in 2000

A call from a distraught wife, and another from Lt. Murphy of the Chicago PD Special Investigation Unit makes Harry believe things are looking up, but they are about to get worse, much worse. Someone has violated the first law of magic: Thou Shalt Not Kill. Tracking that someone takes Harry into the dangerous underbelly of Chicago, from mobsters to vampires, while he himself is under suspicion of the crimes.


(10) Sacrifice (Legacy of the Force Book 5) by Karen Traviss in 2007

Civil war rages as the Galactic Alliance led by Cal Omas and the Jedi forces of Luke Skywalker battles a confederation of breakaway planets that rally to the side of rebellious Corellia. The story follows Kosar the thief who enlist the aid of his ex-lover and Shantasi warrior A’Meer, and their band of unexpected allies as he embarks on a journey to protect a special boy from the dark forces closing in on him.


(13) Vector Prime (The New Jedi Order Book 1) by R.A. Salvatore in 1999

As the Jedi and the Republic focus on internal struggles after the downfall of the Empire, a new threat surfaces from beyond the farthest reaches of the Outer Rim–an enemy bearing weapons and technology unlike anything New Republic scientists have ever seen.


(14) Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter by Michael Reeves in 2001

After years of waiting in the shadows, Darth Sidious is taking the first step in his master plan to bring the Republic to its knees. Key to his scheme are the Neimoidians of the Trade Federation. Then one of his Neimoidian contacts disappears, and Sidious does not need his Force-honed instincts to suspect betrayal. He orders his apprentice, Darth Maul, to hunt the traitor down.


(15) The Great Hunt (The Wheel of Time Book 2) by George R.R. Martin in 1991

The story features young heroes Rand al’Thor, Mat Cauthon, and Perrin Aybara, who join Shienaren soldiers in a quest to retrieve the Horn of Valere. At the same time, Egwene al’Vere, Nynaeve al’Meara, and Elayne Trakand go to the White Tower in Tar Valon to learn Aes Sedai ways. Finally, an exotic army invades the western coast.

(18) The Waste Lands (The Dark Tower Book 3) by Stephen King in 1991

Roland, Susannah, and Eddie must draw Jake into Mid-World and then follow the Path of the Beam all the way to the Dark Tower. Along the way our tet stumbles into the ruined city of Lud and are caught between the warring gangs of the Pubes and the Grays. The only way out of Lud is to wake Blaine the Mono, an insane train that has a passion for riddling, and for suicidal journeys.


(19) A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire Book 2) by George R.R. Martin 1999

A Clash of Kings depicts the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros in civil war, while the Night’s Watch mounts a reconnaissance to investigate the mysterious people known as wildlings. Meanwhile, Daenerys Targaryen continues her plan to conquer the Seven Kingdoms.


(20) Armageddon’s Children (Genesis of Shannara Book 1) by Terry Brooks in 2006

Navigating the scarred and poisoned landscape that once was America and guided by a powerful talisman, Knight of the Word Logan Tom has sworn an oath to seek out a remarkable being born of magic, possessed of untold abilities, and destined to lead the final fight against darkness.


(21) Realm of the Reaper (Everworld Book 4) by K.A. Applegate in 1999

In the fourth installment, April, Jalil, David, and Christopher take on Vikings, trolls, Aztecs, and dragons; the group is about to discover the true opposite of heaven.


(22) Moon Called (Mercy Thompson Book 1) by Patricia Briggs in 2006

The story follows Harry Potter, young wizard who discovers his magical heritage on his eleventh birthday, and his acceptance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.


(24) Crimson City (Crimson City Book 1) by Liz Maverick in 2005

Follows vampire Fleur Dumont, who struggles to attain her family’s legacy after the murder of her brothers, and Dain Reston, a B-Ops member struggling with his own inner demons, as the two of them attempt to solve the murder of her brothers.


(25) Splintered (Splintered Series Book 1) by A.G. Howard in 2013

In the real Wonderland, Alyssa Gardner must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to save her family from the curse stretching back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland


(26) The Last Wish (The Witcher Book 1) by Andrzej Sapkowski in 1990

The story follows Tane Carver, a human who lacks magic but more than makes up for it with his wits, is tasked with solving a murder on campus despite its unbreakable wards with the help of a half-orc named Kadka.


(28) Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor by Carrie Bebris in 2001

A dracolich and his sorcerous queen have seized control of the Mythal, the ancient magic that once protected the war-ravaged elven capital. Once the elven ruin is completely in their thrall, the cult intends to expand its domination one city — and one soul — at a time.


(29) The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien in 1937

The Hobbit is set within Tolkien’s fictional universe and follows the quest of home-loving hobbit Bilbo Baggins to win a share of the treasure guarded by Smaug the dragon.


(30) A Darker Crimson (Crimson City Book 4) by Carolyn Jewel in 2005

Officer Claudia Donovan goes to the plane of Orcus, home of the demons, to rescue her daughter with the help of a vampire, Tiberiu Korzha, while dealing with the demon Lath.
