Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Three Review

Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Three is a comic book series written by Tom Taylor and art design by Bruno Redondo. Batman must ask for help against Superman from the one person he would never trust: John Constantine, who unites a team of magical beings, superheroes, and ordinary humans to stand against the Man of Steel.

The story this time around changes up the formula by introducing magic. Batman decides to use magic, Superman’s other greatest weakness, with the help of John Constantine, Deadman, Doctor Fate, and Zatana. The story is definitely different and with magic on the table very unpredictable especially when the stakes are so high.  From the get go, things just get crazy and it does keep up a really good pace exploring its share of tragedy.

The ending builds to a great climax where we see former friends turned enemies put aside their differences when the threat of Trigon and Mr. Mxyzptlk threaten to tear the fabric of reality. There are so many different twists and turns and a lot of it has to do with Constantine.  For those who want an entertaining story that deviates from the typical fighting they’ll enjoy the direction of the story this go around.  (4 out of 5)

This time around we get to focus more on some of the magical characters of DC and honestly the writing for them is superb. Characters like John Constantine, Spectre, Zatana, Deadman, Ragman, Doctor Fate, Dr. Occult, Etrigan, Rose Psychic, and Raven get the spotlight. Some more important characters is Detective Chimp, Harvey Bullock, and Renee Montoya. If you didn’t like Constantine before, you’re definitely not gonna like him now. He’s basically the third main character who joins Batman because Superman’s war with the Green Lanterns has taken someone important to him.

I like Batman and he comes into the issue ready for war when he becomes the host of Etrigan the Demon. I like how there is a serious focus on characters like Nightwing, Doctor Fate, and surprisingly Deadman.  This is the second time I’ve actually gotten invested into the character of Deadman.  Detective Chimp is freaking awesome. Never knew much about the character.  Look, if you like these characters then you’ll get to see them have their moments.  (5 out of 5)

The artwork is freaking sweet. Bruno Redondo is great at what he does and has the an eye for capturing dynamic sequences. The character depth is great.  (4 out of 5)

The writing continues to be great, and under Taylor’s direction explores new territories. I was honestly surprised by how effective Taylor’s vision was with the characters. Taylor knows the characters and that’s why he nails the motivations and side stories. It does stray away from the themes of social control but the idea behind magic changes the overall theme. Like previous entries there’s a lot of action, humor, and plenty of dark moments. A lot of characters die and I mean a lot.  I love how he introduces Etrigan and how badass his moment is.  I like how Taylor uses the conflict to raise the stakes even higher.  There are some really powerful moments which I won’t spoil but know that if you’ve liked Taylor’s style where he keeps building plot twist upon plot twist, you’ll love the world he’s continued to build. (5 out of 5)

In the end, Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Three just ups the ante, delivery quite a thrill ride.   More characters of the DC Universe, a pretty freakin sweet story filled with numerous twists and turns, great work by Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo.  Definitely one of the best of the series which leads me to say Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Three gets 5 out of 5.
