Top 10 Alien-Types in Fiction

An alien is a creature from a planet other than Earth. Aliens can take many forms regardless if they’re humanoid or not, intelligent or not, with inhuman abilities or not.

 1. Xenomorph (Alien)

Xenomorphs are a predatory race of creatures with a eusocial caste system ruled over by a single fertile queen who breeds warriors/soldiers, workers/drones, and other specialists strains similar to bees and ants.  Xenomorphs lack a technological society as their only drive is the propagation and self-preservation of their species.  They implant their larvae inside living hosts, which violently erupt from the host’s body after a short incubation period, rapidly maturing from juvenile into adulthood within hours.  These creatures take on various forms depending on the characteristics of their hosts.

2. Necromorph (Dead Space)

Necromorphs are the reanimated bodies of the dead infected by recombinant extraterrestrial genes which are revived and reshaped into horrific new forms extremely quick.  They have no social structure and their only goal is to create more bodies to spread the infection. The actual type of Necromorph created depends on the body type and circumstances, and are capable of surviving in lethal environments. They are extremely aggressive, and will attack any Necromorph on sight.  They also share a sort of Hive mind with very few having independent thought.

3. Flood (Halo)

The Flood is a parasitic virulent life form that can quickly incapacitate and infect different life forms.  However, the infected subject must have sufficient body mass to sustain infection, and even animals can be infected.  Their infection is so powerful they can even corrupt AI and machines.

4. Kryptonians (DC Comics)

Kryptonians are an endangered species from the now destroyed planet Krypton who are indistinguishable from humans.  Their genome is differential at any yellow star, giving them the power of a god. Kryptonians, once outside their star system, acquire new abilities determined by the frequency of each sun’s light and internal radiation. White stars, dwarf stars, and blue stars all give them different properties. Their cells are natural organic solar batteries that absorb and metabolize solar energy, giving them their various abilities such as strength, speed, stamina, invulnerability, healing, flight, and several other abilities.  Kryptonians have four weaknesses; Kryptonite (radiated fragments of Krypton’s core that makes Kryptonians ill as well as the loss of their powers), magic, Red Stars (takes away their powers), and Lead (cannot see through lead).

5. Saiyans (DragonBall)

Saiyans are an endangered yet aggressive warrior race and in the DragonBall series.  Saiyans are human in appearance, although their builds are larger and more muscular with the natural ability to control their ki to fly or for energy attacks.  Their most significant feature are their monkey-like tails.  Their tails act as both their greatest strength (allows them to transform into their great ape forms which multiplies their power by 10) and their greatest weakness (immobilizes them when grabbed or injured).  Another prominent feature is a Saiyan’s ability to grow much stronger from near-death experiences due to their bodies adapting to compensate for the damage dealt, as well as healing faster than a normal human.

6. Time Lords (Doctor Who)

Time Lords are a sapient humanoid race from the planet Gallifrey, with the ability to manipulate time and space through the use of highly advanced technology.  Some interesting facts about them are that they have two hearts, can live for centuries, can heal from injuries fairly quickly, have a respiratory bypass system, and have telepathic abilities.  Their most distinguishing trait is the ability to regenerate their bodies when their fatally wound, thus undergoing a transformation, gaining a new body and a new personality.

7. Arachnids (Starship Troopers)

For the sake of this post, we’re going to be talking about the film version.  Arachnids are a race of insectoid organisms indigenous to the planet of Klendathu, which is the hub of their Arachnid Empire.  They have a society based on a cast system though consist of mindless drones, it is ruled and organized by an extremely intelligent Brain Bug.  They have the ability to colonize planets “by hurling their spore in space” which are performed by the massive Plasma Bugs.

8. Cybertronians (Transformers)

Cybertronians are a machine race originating from their home world, Cybertron.  Cybertronians are different from biological races as they don’t need food or drink, or even breath, but they do need Energon which is essential to their survival.  Within each Cybertronian is a “spark”, as long as this spark endures, the Cybertronian can be rebuilt regardless of the damage.

9. Death Angel (A Quiet Place)

They hunt by their hypersensitive hearing, attacking anything that makes noise.  They boast an incredible amount of speed, as well as an impenetrable armored shell, and are blind.

10. Yuuzhan Vong (Star Wars)

Yuuzhan Vong are humanoid religious zealots who’ve originated outside the galaxy.  Viewing mechanical technology as blasphemy, their technological innovations were genetically engineered and purely organic.
