Bethesda Wanting to Keep the Fallout Series In House, Good or Bad?

The other side of the topic is the latest on Bethesda not likely to allow outside developers to make anymore Fallout games.  Now, this isn’t to say that it’ll never happen again but with Bethesda’s expansion there’s little need to hire outside help.

In an interview with The Guardian, Bethesda boss Todd Howard stated that the company would rather keep developing big games internally.  “I wouldn’t say never,” Howard said. “[But] now that our company is so big, it’s always better to keep stuff internal … it becomes less likely, but I could never say never. I thought the Obsidian guys did a fabulous job.”

In addition its main office in Maryland, Bethesda Game Studios opened a studio in Montreal in 2015. Earlier this year, Bethesda rebranded BattleCry Studios as Bethesda Game Studios Austin, based in Austin, Texas. The next big Bethesda Game Studios title is this year’s Fallout 76, which is a multiplayer-focused entry in the long-running series. After that, the studio will release its new sci-fi game Starfield, and after that will come The Elder Scrolls VI.

It wouldn’t be so bad if they were to hire Obsidian to undertake another Fallout game, especially since they’ve expressed interest in it.  In 2010, Obsidian Entertainment released the critically acclaimed Fallout: New Vegas.

Now I’m on the fence about this, because on one hand I can perfectly understand why the company prefers this.  They have the financial backing and the man power to undertake any project they want.  So it makes little sense to hire outside talent.  But on the other hand, modders have been constantly upgrading Fallout 4, something Bethesda failed keep doing (despite its awesome dlc). And with the many upcoming mod expansions why not let another company take the reigns.  They clearly have no problem letting modders do it.
