Kristen Wigg Set to Play Cheetah in Upcoming Wonder Woman 2

The world was in awe when Wonder Woman came out in 2017 and showed that there could be a successful superhero movie led by a woman.  And with all the hype surrounding superhero movies nowadays, it is only natural that fans want to see a sequel.

In an effort to rival its Marvel Comics‘ success, DC Comics has created the DC Extended Universe.  And despite some great movies the DCEU has been on shaky ground.  But there is no denying that Wonder Woman is a highlight of the franchise as the sequel might very well make or break the franchise.

In the first Wonder Woman we got to see Gal Gadot transform the inexperienced, naive Diana into a hardened warrior. The other cast included Chris Pine as spy Steve Trevor, Robin Wright as Antiope, Connie Nielsen as Hippolyta, David Thewlis as Ares, and Elena Anaya as Doctor Poison.

Which brings us to the meat and potatoes of this article.  Comedian actress Kristen Wiig has been cast as Cheetah in the upcoming Wonder Woman 2 sequel.  Shocked? A great many people across the web have been stunned by this news.  Wiig has been most notable for comedic presence onscreen.  At the time of this article I’ve only seen her in Ghostbusters as one of the leads despite her being in other films in small roles.

There are several incarnations of the character as other people have assumed the role.  Wiig is most likely playing the Barbara Ann Minerva version of Cheetah if it hasn’t already been stated.  Minerva is the most current version of the character since DC’s major reboot of the franchise.  Wonder Woman and Cheetah have had a long standing rivalry and she is probably as prominent as Lex Luthor and the Joker are to Superman and Batman.

Barbara Ann Minerva is a archaeologist who becomes Cheetah after being possessed by the Goddess of the Hunt (as of the New 52 reboot).  She has immortality, increased strength and agility, razor sharp fangs and claws, and the appearance of a cat.

While there are several capable actresses I would’ve picked, Uma Thurman, Thandie Newton, Sofia Boutella, Keira Knightley, Rebecca Ferguson, just to name a few, I’m not going to say that Wiig isn’t the woman for the job.

But this also begs the question as to how the character will evolve over the course of the film.  Will she turn instantly bad, or will she transition over the course of the movie? Will she instantly transform or will it be a gradual one?  Will she have a relationship with Diana that gradually diminish, will it instantly break, or will they be friends at all?  And also, how savage do we want the character to be.  Me, I want her to be blood thirsty and kickass.

But there are a lot of unanswered questions that can’t be addressed at this point.  With more news surrounding the sequel there will be plenty to talk about over the coming year regarding the film, the story, possible cast, and more.
