I Am Not a Serial Killer Review | 31 Days of Halloween 2020

I Am Not a Serial Killer is a 2016 supernatural horror thriller film directed by Billy O’Brien, starring Christopher Lloyd, Max Records, Laura Fraser, and Christina Baldwin.  Based on Dan Wells’ 2009 novel of the same name, the story centers around a Midwestern teenager named John, a diagnosed sociopath, who must hunt down a paranormal serial killer in his hometown.

Positives:

  • Good performances
  • Good score
  • Good cast
  • Good characters
  • Good story

Negatives:

  • Low-budget, statically look
  • Poor CGI

Plot:  Centering around a Midwestern teenager named John, a diagnosed sociopath, who must hunt down a paranormal serial killer in his hometown the film is very slow paced but it does capture that certain sense of suspense. John having to deal with his impulses as well as finding the killer is two really good paralleling stories. The ending had a great build but is not as intense, not with dialogue nor with action. (4 out of 5)

Characters:  John (Records) is the main protagonist diagnosed a sociopath, and a likable character and despite his “condition” he does have a good heart.  The events of the film do help to make him a more tragic character.  April (Fraser) is John’s mother and a likable character, especially considering how she has to deal with John’s “condition”. Liked Margaret (Baldwin), she puts some depth to John’s character. Crowley (Lloyd) is a really cool antagonist.  Despite his totally radical abilities he does show character, with understandable motivation. There is also this connection between John and Crowley. (4 out of 5)

Cast:  Really good performances by the cast.  Max Records does a good job with the character John.  Laura Fraser is really good also. Really appreciated Karl Geary. Christopher Lloyd gives a really dark performance. (3 out of 5)

Visuals:  The movie does have a low-budget, static look to it.  The creature design as well as effects could’ve been better. (3 out of 5)

Score:  Has a pretty good soundtrack, courtesy of Adrian Johnston. Definitely kept the film suspenseful. (3 out of 5)

Writing:  The film dies come with a really good script.  Billy O’Brien does a great job of building the suspense while keeping the film engaging.  The dialogue is pretty decent.  The ending feels like it could’ve been more intense especially considering what Crowley says to John in the church. Would’ve liked to have see John’s relationship with that one girl to have developed. (3 out of 5)

The Verdict:  In the end, I Am Not a Serial Killer is a pretty sweet film.  Definitely a film for horror and thriller fans.  Despite the statically look to the way the film is shot and slow pace, the film does have good performances, a good cast, a great story, and good direction.  I Am Not a Serial Killer gets 3 out of 5.
