The Dark Knight series revolutionized the superhero genre but it was Ledger’s performance as the Joker who brought a new brand of criminal to the big screen.

(12) The Girl in the Spider’s Web

Ever since watching the very first movie I was enthralled with the series. Now, I know that this movie didn’t do well in the theatres but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Claire Foy is great as the titular Lisbeth Salander and hope to see her return in the role.

(13) Hell or High Water
The film follows two brothers who carry out a series of bank robberies to save their family ranch while being pursued by Texas Rangers. There’s a lot to love about this movie but it’s the performances by the brilliant cast that takes it to the next level. As far as heist movies go, this one’s got heart.

(14) The Mist
The plot revolves around a small that is enveloped in an unnatural mist that conceals vicious monsters as extreme tensions rise among the survivors. Stephen King’s come out with some excellent works and from that some great movie adaptations. The Mist is one of those movies that shows us that horror movies can be still effective if directors follows the less-is-more tactic. The monsters are great but it’s the human element that’s just as deadly.

(15) Spider-Man 2
The film follows Peter Parker who’s struggling to manage both his personal life and his duties as Spider-Man, which have him in conflict with a diabolical villain Dr. Otto Octavius who’s recreating the dangerous experiment. Spider-Man 2 is helmed as one of the best comic book movies of all time and it’s easy to see why. The story is deep, the performances are great and the action is on point. Not to mention the train fight is one of the most memorable superhero fights in film.

(16) Titus
In this epic tale of revenge, the Roman general Titus Andonicus sows the seeds of vengeance when he executes the son of the enemy Queen. Titus is one of those hidden gems that artistic and obscure but is really good. The performances are good and this movie is what got me into Anthony Hopkins as an actor. The story is deep and pretty damn dark with its underlining themes of revenge.

(17) The Fifth Element
Set in the 23rd century, a taxicab driver named Korben Dallas joins forces with a mysterious young woman to recover four mystical stones in order to save the world. If you like action, romance and comedy wrapped up in a perfect science fiction package, this movie has it. This is the movie where I literally fell in love with Milla Jovovich, fought along side Bruce Willis, and laughed with Chris Tucker. It’s a solid movie that’s entertaining with a great soundtrack.

(18) Serenity
Set in 2517, Serenity is the story of the captain and crew of Serenity, a “Firefly-class” spaceship. The captain and first mate are veterans of the Unification War, having fought on the losing Independent side against the Alliance. Their lives of smuggling and cargo-running are interrupted by a psychic passenger who harbors a dangerous secret. The show Firefly might be cancelled but the story continues in Serenity. Characters we love fight on a grandiose scale and the cinematic look of it works for the setting. It’s got action, great special effects, great performances, and a badass River Tam.

(19) The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Continuing the plot of The Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo and Sam continue their journey to Mordor. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli aid the war-torn nation of Rohan against an approaching army. Merry and Pippin meet the Ent and prepare for battle against Isengard. We see the story of the Fellowship of the Ring expanded with grander battles and bigger stakes. Nothing compares to the battle of Helms Deep with its air of desperation, dark atmosphere, heavy downpour, and forboding score. And let’s not forget the focus of Gollum/Smeagle.

(20) Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
The plot follows Newt Scamander and Albus Dumbledore as they attempt to take down the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald while facing new threats in a more divided wizarding world. Wasn’t the biggest fan of the first film but I enjoyed what this sequel provided. It’s entertaining, has character development, has an engaging story, has a memorable villain.
