Welcome to the another edition of NarikChase.com and in this post we’re focusing on another Character Ranker. This time we’re ranking Krysten Ritter’s portrayal of Jessica Jones in the Marvel superhero show, Jessica Jones.
Jessica Jones first appeared in 2001 in Alias #1. She was created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Gaydos. Jones is a former superhero who becomes the owner of Alias Private Investigations.
I just love Jessica Jones as a character. She’s dark, brooding, an asshole but she’s also compassionate and determined. She’s definitely one of the best characters to come out of the MCU. I like that she’s not perfect. She’s haunted by her past, a straight up drunk, rebellious of authorities, vulgar, self-destructive. So when she does open up, does show her caring side, it’s more prominent.
Ritter does a fantastic job with the role, and before her, I knew nothing of the character and cared even less. Not only does she look the part, but Ritter’s history of films make her a perfect cast. She’s good playing the bad girl type and it helps to work in the character’s favor.
It would be incredibly hard for me to replace Ritter as Jones. Two actresses that could potentially take on the role would be Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Lauren Cohan, both actresses familiar with comic book roles. I like Winstead and she’s got a history of playing dark and brooding characters who have issues. She’s got wide range and like Ritter is able to make compelling characters with them. Winstead played Huntress and despite the lack of screentime, she did a decent job. Cohan is a great actress and if her stint in the Walking Dead doesn’t confirm it, nothing will. She can bounce between strength and vulnerability which would be great to show the internal conflicts of the character. She can be very serious but also compassionate, the very same traits that make Jessica likable and irritating.
Jones pretty much maintains the same look the entire series of her traditional jeans, boots, white tank top, and leather jacket. It’s simple and with Ritter’s figure works to bring the character to life. Outside of Jones’ strength we see little of her abilities but when it’s done it’s done really well. I would’ve liked to have seen her in her superhero suit but at least we did get the throwback.
I can say that when she’s on the screen, she steals her scenes. Whether she’s kicking ass, being a drunk, or just being an asshole, she’s got a lot of charm. I really do like her supporting cast especially since she has such a strong developing arc and that it extents to the other characters as well. I like that everything she does actually affects them, for better or for worse.
In the end, Krysten Ritter’s portrayal of Jessica Jones is spot on. I really like her character, connected with a lot that she dealt with, Ritter’s performance as the character, has a great supporting cast, and the just the overall journey. If there’s one thing I can say about Marvel is that they were spot on with her casting. Krysten Ritter deserves 4 out of 5. The only problem I have with the character is that the series freaking ended.
