Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Two is a comic book series written by Tom Taylor and art by Bruno Redondo.  The death of one of their own has divided Earth’s protectors as hero turns against hero. As Superman’s iron grip on the world tightens, at the edge of the galaxy, the Green Lantern Corps has been alerted to Superman’s rise.

The story is just as engaging as Year One with so many twists and turns.  This time around news of Superman’s dictatorship has reached Oa and now the Green Lanterns have decided to step in.  However, Superman and the Justice League aren’t fighting the Green Lanterns alone.  Sinestro and the Yellow Lantern Corps decide to aid the Man of Steel.  I think this just upped the ante.  There are some really important deaths that make the story feel sad.  The tension filled story does lead into a climatic battle between the Green Lanterns against the Justice League and Yellow Lanterns, which was freaking awesome. If this story doesn’t grip you, I don’t know what will.  (4 out of 5)

The characters continue to be really engaging and well-written.  Many other characters step into the spotlight including Guy Gardner, Sinestro, Jim Gordon, Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Black Canary.  Batman’s out of commission as in Year One, Superman broke his back and his absence from the story does allow other characters to be more active, especially Jim Gordon.  Gordon has always been a badass but he steps his game up. 

I thought Guy Gardner was a great character, he’s trying to quell the tension between the Guardians and Superman’s forces. Hal takes the lead and he’s just a dick.  He abandon Black Canary’s friendship after Oliver’s death.  He betrays the Green Lanterns joining Superman and even the Sinestro Corps. Poor Kyle Rayner never stood a chance and it was a crime what happened to John Stewart.  Although Superman is the main antagonist, Sinestro is the secondary antagonist, taking the place of Diana (who’s still in a coma) as the devil in his ear exploiting Clark’s anger and frustration. 

Again, Superman’s a dick but he isn’t unbeatable and he does make mistakes.   However, of all the things Superman has done, joining villains just shows how irredeemable he’s become.  The characters are handled well enough and again their motivations and perspectives are understandable. (5 out of 5)

Really enjoyed the art style by Bruno Redondo which continues to impress me.  There is a lot of depth to the detail and an edge to the violence.  The war between the Lanterns is illustrated well, making for a chaotic and brutal battle. (4 out of 5)

The writing is superb and is to be commended. I like how Tom Taylor focuses on how all the characters are feeling the changes and consequences.  The characters either die, join Superman, join the Insurgency, or go into hiding which speaks volumes for the deep characterizations. 

The writing’s very violent and isn’t afraid to be gory.  Of course, a lot of people die and those deaths add meaning and emotional depth to the story.  There’s definitely depth to the dialogue, making for some great conversations.  There’s this really good moment between Catwoman and Damian, as well as Batman and Gordon.  And it doesn’t end there because the combination of Taylor’s strong writing and Redondo’s artistic style make for an epic journey. (5 out of 5)

In the end, Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Two has definitely exceeded my expectations with its bold story, well-written characters, brutal action sequences and well-placed humor.    The efforts of Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo were not wasted and they definitely are as dynamic as Batman and Superman in their best day.  Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Two gets 5 out of 5.
