Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year One Review

Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year One is a comic book series written by Tom Taylor with art including Jheremy Raapack and Mike S. Miller.  When the Man of Steel can’t protect the thing he holds most dear, he decides to stop trying to save the world—and start ruling it. Now, the Last Son of Krypton is enforcing peace on Earth by any means necessary. Only one man stands between Superman and absolute power: Batman. And the Dark Knight will use any method at his disposal to stop his former friend from reshaping the world in his shattered image.

Ever wondered what would happen if Superman decided to go bad? And no, I’m not talking about Superman III.  The world is forever changed when the Joker decides to target the Man of Steel. Very interesting and gripping story that gradually gets worse and worse as the civil war between heroes gets more intense.  The whole story focuses on the tragedy, fear, anger, hatred, and pain of its characters. Although it features a grand amount of characters the story mainly focuses on Batman, Superman, Damian Wayne, and Wonder Woman.  For all of those who’ve said that Superman is a boyscout, they’ll be shocked to see how dark he falls.  Superman’s bringing the world’s finest together to police Earth and end all crime, but not if Batman can help it.  Batman forms the Insurgency in response to Superman’s growing regime.  What’s great is how well the character’s motivations and goals are established.

It’s great seeing our favorite characters at war with each other, but even better seeing the different sides of the conflict.  Superman wants to stop all crime and his transformation isn’t instantaneous.  It’s gradual with many mistakes being made along the way.  Next to him is Wonder Woman.  This Wonder Woman isn’t the majestic warrior we know in the main continuity.  This one’s pushing Clark to become this villain, one who isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty. She’s like Faora to Zod or Bellatrix to Voldemort.  I like that some heroes are 100% behind him while others are on the fence, specifically Flash and Shazam. (5 out of 5)

I can honestly say I appreciated the various artists and their art styles.  I like the character designs and think that the costume designs are freaking awesome.  The action sequences are handled really well, especially the brutality of the fights. (4 out of 5)

Tom Taylor is a great writer who truly understands the characters.  The writing is actually pretty well thought out and honestly, it’s easy to understand everyone’s motivations and their perspectives.  It focuses on the fact that heroes can be corrupted, especially from grief and tragedy more often than not. There are a shit ton of great moments, intense moments, sad moments.  Taylor does touch on some pretty important topics.  There’s the question of how far we must go for the greater good?  How far we follow a good man gone bad?  Where do we balance force and power against security? (5 out of 5)

In the end, Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year One is one the best storylines ever produced by DC Comics.  I had very few problems with it and thoroughly enjoyed it.  Tom Taylor brings his A-game as he weaves his tale into tragedy and exploring the darker side of our favorite heroes.  Tom Taylor’s writing is exceptional, art direction great, strong characters, a lot of memorable moments, tons of action, and a compelling story. Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year One gets 5 out of 5.
