Batman Unlimited: Mechs vs. Mutants | NarikChase Review

Batman Unlimited: Mechs vs. Mutants is a 2016 direct-to-video animated superhero film, directed by Curt Geda, starring the voices of Roger Craig Smith, Chris Diamantopoulos, Will Friedle, Charlie Schlatter, and Dana Snyder.  Set as the third entry in the Batman Unlimited series the plot begins after Mr. Freeze turns Bane and Killer Croc into mutants the size of skyscrapers, in which Batman thinks big and dons a giant battle suit made in his image.

Plot:  The story is dumb as hell and makes no sense.  Penguin talks Mr. Freeze into attacking Gotham with giant monsters.  Batman and crew have to stop them.  It’s a pretty simple plot.  However, there’s nothing to it.  There’s this subplot where Damian is learning how to be a superhero and it’s a good developing arc for the character.  Back to the main story.  We all know Mr. Freeze.  The film doesn’t explain how he knows how to make people giant.  The climatic battle is pretty entertaining though just as frustrating with all the nonsense that it spills.  There are no interesting twists and the whole Penguin betraying Penguin was stupid, predictable, and ultimately dumb.  (1 out of 5)

Characters:  You get Batman and his crew consist of Damien, Alfred, Nightwing, Green Arrow, and Flash.  They’re fun, they’re likable, they’re what you would expect from this motely crew.  Why is Langstrom in this movie?  When the hell did Langstrom become so knowledge…hell a master at technology.  It’s freaking stupid.  The film has several villains.  The main two are Mr. Freeze and Penguin with henchmen Killer Croc, Bane, Chemo, and Clayface.  I like the incarnations of the characters but they leave much to be desired.  The only one that’s of any substance is Buzz the penguin, who’s hilarious. (2 out of 5)

Cast: The voice performances are actually pretty good, much like in the other films.  There are some reoccurring performances but also new ones.  The main include Roger Craig Smith (Batman), Oded Fehr (Freeze), Lucien Dodge (Robin), Dana Snyder (Penguin), Chris Diamantopoulos (Green Arrow), Will Friedle (Nightwing), and Charlie Schlatter (Flash).  Supporting performances include Phil LaMarr, Carlos Alazraqui, John DiMaggio, Dave B. Mitchell, Troy Baker, and Richard Epcar. (4 out of 5)

Visuals:  As I’ve stated in other movies in this series, I’ve really enjoyed the animation style.  I think it has a great blend of The Batman and Batman: The Brave and the Bold that makes it look appealing.  The character and costume designs are awesome.  Had very little issues with the character designs.  The futuristic look of Gotham looks great. (3 out of 5)

Score:  The music is what you’d expect.  It’s playful, it’s heroic, and it gives the film a bit of personality.  Kevin Riepl does a good job with the music. (3 out of 5)

Writing:  The film was directed by Curt Geda who for some reason thought it was good idea to make this movie.  Why in the hell does Batman have a giant robot?  There’s no reason in the world for him to have a robot. Who the hell wrote this crap?  Hell, I can understand if they introduced other heroes to help out.  Hell, why the hell does Green Arrow have one too?  This crap is stupid.  Since when did Mr. Freeze become a master of turning people and animals into giant monsters?  And for solitude.  Why didn’t he just use his freeze ray to turn them into ice?  What is his obsession with turning people into giant monsters?  It’s a stupid angle that doesn’t make any sense.  He even creates giant monsters with two totally different methods.  It’s never explained how he knows how do it.  I don’t even understand how in the hell Killer Croc is shooting ice beams from his mouth.  Why does Bane’s mask, gloves, tubes, and device grow too?  Why does Chemo’s outfit grow?  Hell, even throughout the climatic battle Batman’s suit takes no damage when it should’ve actually been destroyed.  The Asylum breakout was dumb as hell.  Why didn’t they release all the prisoners so that when Batman got there they could   use them as a diversion? That’ll make too much sense though.  Hell, why didn’t Cheetah and Killer Croc bring up Penguin abandoning them in Batman: Animal Instincts?  Look, I understand this is clearly made for kids but damn, there could’ve been better writing.  I hate the writing in this movie.  It sucks balls.  (1 out of 5)

The Verdict:  In the end, Batman Unlimited: Mechs vs. Mutants is a horrible movie that even the most diehard fan of not only Batman but DC Comics would be hard pressed to like.  Almost everything about the movie is bad except the animation, music, and voice performances.  I hate this movie and would’ve recommend it to anyone.  Batman Unlimited: Mechs vs. Mutants gets a very low 3 out of 5.
