Marvel’s Daredevil (Season 1) is a 2015 superhero action crime drama series created by Drew Goddard starring Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Toby Leonard Moore, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Bob Gunton, Ayelet Zurer, Rosario Dawson, and Vincent D’Onofrio. Season one follows Matt Murdock/Daredevil, a lawyer-by-day who fights crime at night and the rise of crime lord Wilson Fisk.
Matt Murdock begins taking justice to the streets as a butt kicking masked vigilante at night but during the day has opened a law firm with his friend, Foggy Nelson. Matt’s double life is pretty intense as he not only takes down regular gangsters but also takes on the Chinese, Russian mafia, and Yakuza. Matt’s efforts even force him into conflict with corrupt police officers. Charlie Cox was a great cast as Matt. He does a great job with the character, not to say Ben Affleck did a bad job in the movie, but the series does give more time to understand the character.
I half to say that I loved the supporting cast and characters. The cast includes Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Toby Leonard Moore, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Bob Gunton, Ayelet Zurer, and Rosario Dawson. The supporting characters are interesting, they’re well-rounded, love that they’re fleshed out and their motivations.
Wilson Fisk is on the scene manipulating events from behind the scenes. He does stay silent during the first few episodes, but Murdock’s interference forces him to the forefront. Now, Fisk is definitely a threatening figure, but the season does show him as a deep character, especially with his romantic interest with Vanessa Marianna. He’s torn, he has his own emotional traumas to deal with as well daunting backstory and even his relationships with Vanessa and his right hand, Wesley (who is freaking awesome). However, the sequence where the guy kills himself for snitching shows just how menacing Fisk is. Interesting to see how similar the Fisk’s origins are to Murdock’s.
There’s a lot that the season does right. The cast is actually really good and have enough depth and range to flesh out the characters. The writing is some of the best in a comic book show. Visually, it’s quite appealing. The way the city is captured gives the season diversity in terms of tone. The action is really good, the fights are well choreographed and straight up brutal. It’s cool seeing the use of martial arts in a street brawl.
In the end, Marvel’s Daredevil (Season 1) is actually really, really good. It does a good job of balancing courtroom drama and superhero action. The storytelling is really good, and it actually has me interested in the Daredevil character. It’s definitely a great experience, and I highly recommend that everyone watches it. Marvel’s Daredevil (Season 1) gets 4 out of 5.
