Welcome to the 7th episode of Casting Choices. In this episode, we’re talking a look at the Dark Knight. In light of the news that Ben Affleck has stepped down from the role of Batman in the DCEU, we’ve decided to give our thoughts of who should take the reigns. Our four choices include Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Barnes, Jon Hamm, and Thomas Jane.
Jake Gyllenhaal has become such a really talented actor, utilizing years of diverse roles to hone his practice. He’s played some really deep characters, horrible characters, likable characters. He would be a great Batman because of those quick shifts, those avenues of change, that deep well of experience that he’s garnered. He play a very dark character in the film Nightcrawler who was smart, patient, and able to adapt. He also played in the 2011 science fiction thriller Source Code, the 2004 disaster film The Day After Tomorrow, and the 2001 thriller Donnie Darko. Is playing Mysterio in the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Don’t know much about Ben Barnes outside of his role as Billy Ruso aka Jigsaw in the Punisher tv series and Tom Ward in the Seventh Son film. However, his badass performance as Ruso gives me hope that that level of anger, violence, and ruthless can translate to the Dark Knight. Also, Barnes has the looks to be a good playboy Bruce Wayne while having that bad boy side that would make for a great Batman.
It takes a strong actor to play such an iconic character and Jon Hamm could potentially be that man. Jon Hamm’s most known as the lead Don Draper in the tv series Mad Men who’s wit and charisma have him successful in a pretty insane situation. He’s dramatic and diverse which can help to build a solid Bruce Wayne while also edgy which can make for an awesome Batman. He’s also played in Baby Driver as a badass bank robber.
Thomas Jane has played in some pretty interesting roles. He’s already played another comic book character, Frank Castle aka the Punisher in the 2004 film release. One of my all time favorite horror films the Mist, Jane was the protagonist. He’s played in 2018 sci fi action film The Predator, thriller 1922, sci fi horror Deep Blue Sea, Mutant Chronicles, and Stephen King’s Dreamcatcher. He even played in the tv series Hung where his brilliance as a dramatic and comedic actor shine. With his background, Jane could easily play an older Batman, years in the field.
