Leprechaun 2 is a 1994 horror comedy film directed by Rodman Flender, starring Warwick Davis, Charlie Heath, Shevonne Durkin, Sandy Baron, and Adam Biesk. It is the second installment in the Leprechaun horror film series and centers on a sadistically evil leprechaun hunting for a bride.
Positives:
- Interesting premise
- Good score
- Decent performances
- Good use of practical effects
- Good use of make-up effects
Negatives:
- Choppy story
- Lackluster characters
- Conveniences in the plot
Plot: The story isn’t as exciting as it could’ve been but it is entertaining none-the-less. The leprechaun attempting to find a bride is an interesting premise however the “curse” he enacts does really little to nothing. The story would’ve been better implemented had O’Day been able to warn his daughter and that the story of the leprechaun actually been passed down through the generations to make the story feel more personal. And also, the story should’ve really focused on Bridget’s family dealing with this rather than her, Cody, and Morty. (2 out of 5)
Characters: Bridget (Durkin) is the only good character. One of the main protagonists she has to deal with the curse of being married to the Leprechaun. Cody (Heath) is a likable character but hardly one worth rooting for. He’s Bridget’s boyfriend but there is little to no substance to his character and even less substance to their relationship. The scam artist Morty (Baron) is literally the worst character. He’s stupid, he’s unlikable and watching him get what he deserves is priceless. Who would root for such a sleazeball? (2 out of 5)
Cast: Although the performances are decent there really isn’t anything memorable about performers. Durkin, Heath, and Baron do a good enough job. Davis again gives a very serious, yet humorous performance as the twisted son of a b****. (3 out of 5)
Visuals: There is a pretty good use of the practical and make-up effects. The magic again does look crappy compared to today’s standards. (2 out of 5)
Score: The score was actually pretty good; it definitely kept the suspense going. (3 out of 5)
Writing: The script is decent although there are some moments where it could’ve been tightened up a bit. An example of this is when the leprechaun goes to abduct Bridget but drops one of his gold coins in the process. Really? The introduction of iron has a weakness does help to balance out the character. The writing is leagues better than its predecessor Leprechaun. The humor is cheesy and sometimes does feel… ill timed. However, the script and direction do provide a good enough film. (3 out of 5)
The Verdict: In the end, Leprechaun 2 is leagues better than the first film although it does have its share of problems. Despite the lackluster characters, choppy plot, and certain conveniences in the script, it does feature good music, decent performances, decent use of practical and make-up effects, and an interesting story. Leprechaun 2 gets 2 out of 5. It’s not really good, but really bad either. Worth atleast a watch.
