DragonBall Legends | NarikChase Review

DragonBall Legends is a 2018 free-to-play mobile fighting video game developed and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, released for the iOS and Android.

Campaign:  There is something to the campaign as it does grow increasingly challenging as players progress, so grinding is a must.  It consist of three main modes; Story, PvP and Events. PvP is fun but it can be frustrating if you’re face opponents with a fuck ton more health than yours.  As far as the story is concerned, it’s interesting. Anyway, this saiyan named Shallot is sent back from an unknown time and place to the current timeline where he aids the heroes battle villains while trying to find out the mysteries surrounding himself. Shallot is an interesting character though I feel the story doesn’t flesh him out enough. There are even other new characters Zahha and Giblet.  The campaign is also split into these events that feature other stories mostly surrounding other DBZ characters.  There’s more to it but I’ll keep this train rolling. (3 out of 5)

Gameplay:  This is a Free-to-Play game so it does operate like one. There’s a shit ton of characters and plenty fan favorites.  It’s great having so many characters because players can create a party of six (which players can create up to ten parties), then choose three to actually fight.  Players can switch characters.  Combat is exactly the same for each character with no deviation. In battle, characters are floating in the air opposite their opponent.  Taping the screen will have character attack and swiping side-to-side will move them.  During combat, players use cards to select moves (special, ki blast, melee combos, and power ups).  Combats layered but simple enough to enjoy.  Next to the cards players will need to consider distance, ki usage, evade, block, and counter.

Characters can be equipped with items that increase their stats.  Characters level up with experience gained from winning battles, completing events, and training.  Players also earn items, gear, and even other characters by progressing through the story and the special events.  One of the downsides is how repetitive the gameplay is, which is to be expected with a game like this.    Despite good reaction time, but the controls are clunky.  There are also a ton of menus that make navigating convoluted. (3 out of 5)

Graphics:  The graphics are surprisingly good, akin to its console counterparts.  The animations are pretty good and it feels like DBZ to the core.  During transition and story, characters are presented as stills with posted dialogue.  This isn’t anything new for DBZ games but it works well for the mobile. (4 out of 5)

Score/Music:  The music sucks much like its predecessors.  I don’t understand why the hell all these DBZ games have poor ass soundtrack.  You’d think they’d include some of the themes from the series.  The sound effects are good, everything sounds like you’d think it would. (3 out of 5)

Replay Value:  There’s a lot to appreciate about this game that will have gamers on it longer.  First, there are a lot of characters and if you’re willing to you can collect them all, there are several ways to go about doing it.  Second, the PvP is oddly satisfying.  Yes, it’s great challenging characters from around the world and it makes the experience more intimate.  It will frustrate some, especially when you’re getting your ass kicked by someone with a higher level, but you’ll feel like a king when you’re battling someone with a lower level.  Third, if you’re just one of those who just enjoy grinding games, there’s a lot of grinding to be had.  There’s a lot more to the replayability.  (3 out of 5)

The Verdict:  In the end, DragonBall Legends is a welcomed addition to the DBZ franchise.  Yes, it fits the typical formula for a free-to-play game but you can’t argue with all the goodies it has.  Really the only issues are the repetitive gameplay and lack of deviation when it comes to the characters.  But outside of that the sound is good, story interesting, large roster of characters, fun gameplay, tons of unlockables, and lots of replayability.  DragonBall Legends gets 3 out of 5.
