There’s a reason that this series has come under fire and in this post we’re going to take a look at it all.  Season one of Batwoman is basically Batman: Year One except with a less interesting character and a carp ton of SJW bullshit and crappy writing.  Season 1 follows Kate Kane who comes back to Gotham City after learning that her ex-girlfriend Sophie is kidnapped by a new criminal gang known as the Wonderland Gang, led by Alice, who has a special relationship to Kate which we’ll dive into later on. Kate’s father, Jacob, is the leader of a paramilitary unit that “protects” Gotham from criminals called the Crows, who were established after the disappearance of the Dark Knight a few years prior. Of course, Kate learns that Bruce Wayne, her cousin, is Batman and she assumes the mantle becoming Batwoman with the help of Luke, the son of Lucius Fox. Thus, we have our season one.

Right off the bat (no pun intended) there’s a lot wrong with the series, starting from the pilot. This is a CW project and it’s part of the Arrowverse so there’s a lot of cringe. Let’s start with the protagonist Kate Kane.  A lot of people do not like this character and honestly, for good reason.  Kate is a flat, unlikable, uninteresting, selfish, and stupid. Nothing against Ruby Rose although her acting doesn’t help, but the character is pure trash. Her only defining traits are that she’s super super gay and that she’s “tough”. These are blue prints to start a character but not to make them good or engaging.  Most of Kate’s actions come off as selfish, stupid, or unwarranted. She has little struggles which fail to nourish the development the character so desperately needed nor really her relationships with other characters.

The saving grace of the series is of course, Alice.  Everything that Kate lacks in personality and story, Alice has in spades. Alice is interesting, has some of the best story arcs, has the best lines.  Now, one of the most redeeming qualities of season one is its villainess, Alice. Alice is revealed to be the long lost sister of Kate (which is revealed so damn early that it’s laughable) and that she has quite the chip on her shoulder. Alice is played by Rachel Skarsten and she practically carries the entire season.

Season 1 suffers from a lot of problems that start at the pilot and it’s the poor pacing, poor direction, and terrible writing. Instead of season 1 taking on a more Batman: Year One direction to help establish our heroine and the world that she lives in, we witness her dive head first like she was diving her first in a woman’s snatch.  And not in a good way.  Kate’s a poorly constructed character and instead of exploring that character the episode thrust her into the Batwoman suit as fast as it could without fully giving us a building arc to why she would. Becoming a vigilante like Batman isn’t something someone can take lightly and that decision isn’t even considered.  When you watch the other DC shows you have a sense of growth (Oliver surviving on the island which sharpened his skills, Barry training at Star Labs, and Supergirl by trial and error) but Kate completely lacks that.

Like the show’s predecessor Birds of Prey, the cheese factor is quite strong. The poor quality of the episodes, the cheesy dialogue, the girls rule boys drool concept, and the fact that none of the characters from the damn franchise make an appearance is as apparent as Kate’s lack of personality.  Batwoman wasn’t particularly well received by comic book fans and this definitely doesn’t help. Season 1 had the potential to bring light to an otherwise obscure (and widely disliked character) but that ship has sailed, crashed into a massive iceberg, then got hit with a nuclear bomb.

But maybe we can get pass the poor characters, poor acting, rushed subplots, and the terrible writing. Cheese can be a good thing especially for entertainment value. However, cheese doesn’t come out the same way it went in.  In fact, it actually stinks pretty bad.  And what really stinks is the SJW bullshit that the show shits out with pride. Between the girl power, lesbianism, the attack on masculinity, identity politics, just the disservice between and with the men and women characters. Hell, half of the women in the series are gay. Why? What does that do for the characters and the other all story? Absolutely nothing.

In the end, Batwoman (Season 1) is probably one of the worst first seasons that I’ve ever seen. This is a prime example of how not to do a show especially a superhero show. If one thing can be taken away from this, is that taking the SJW crap out of your shows and actually putting talent behind the wheel would be a smart move. Hopefully, season two will be a helluva lot better. Batwoman (Season 1) gets 1 out of 5.
