Top 5 Best (and Top 5 Worst) Horror Movies of 2005

There have been a lot of great horror films over the years and many of them worthy of recognition. But with the great come the absolute turds and for every good one there at least five bad ones. In this post, we’re taking a look at the year 2005 and some of out favorite horror films as well as some worthy of punching the director (and possibly the writer).

(1) Land of the Dead (Best)

Land of the Dead takes the concept of a zombie apocalypse and mixes it up a bit. Despite the stupid idea of zombies becoming smart (at least without a decent reason) the human aspect is pretty good too. We have the concept of how monstrous people can be in light of a situation like this. Good action, an interesting story, really good makeup and gore effects.

(2) The Devil’s Rejects (Worst)

House of 1000 Corpses was pretty terrible and unfortunately they thought it was a good idea for a sequel. The Devil’s Rejects tries to take three serial killers and flesh them out as actual people. They’re still unlikable and the crappy writing doesn’t help to make this a compelling story. Most of the characters are unlikable and the dialogue, like most Rob Zombie movies, is terrible and relies too much on foul language.

(3) Feast (Best)

The film manages to change up the horror formula and even comes up with an interesting premise. What makes it good is the fact that it does balance horror with humor. The characters are interesting and likable, and the story has substance. Even when it comes to the monsters themselves, it’s a good use of practical effects.

(4) Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis (Worst)

Necropolis does what Part 3 did and delve a little more into the experimentations surrounding the Tryoxin. Unfortunately, the poorly written characters, and poor writing make this trash. The story doesn’t make any sense, the idea of Uber-Soldiers is completely stupid and what could’ve came off as a survival horror where a group of people attempt to stay alive in an overrun building just comes off as a shallow “action” flick.

(5) Hide and Seek (Best)

I remember watching this movie a while ago and liking the story, the characters, and the performances. Upon watching it again, it actually holds up. The best part of the film is actually the characters and also the growing tension which leads to a an interesting twist. A very enjoyable film.

(6) Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave (Worst)

If you thought the idea of the previous entry was ridiculous then you’re in for a treat. Again, the writing simply fails. Why would someone knowingly pass out this crap if they know that it reanimates people into zombies or don’t know the long term affects at all. This is easily a cash grab with hopefully no one watching it. The whole teenage/college student trope has been old in this series and instead of bringing something freshly bakes, they brought something raw and uncooked.

(7) White Noise (Best)

It’s already great seeing Michael Keaton on the screen but seeing him in a horror thriller is gold. He plays a husband who attempts to contact his wife in the afterlife. But he isn’t alone. Deborah Kara Unger does a good job along side him. It’s got a compelling story with an interesting twist. I like the concepts of death and how it’s connected with the living. It’s got one of those dark but good endings.

(8) Doom (Worst)

It isn’t so much that this isn’t a Doom movie that disappoints me. It’s the fact that it’s a poorly written one. The action sequences aren’t good (except for the FPS sequence which was awesome), most of the characters are forgettable with little to no actual chemistry (and not one good scene of them working as a team), and some of the worst lighting I’ve seen in a movie. Which is too bad because it’s got an interesting premise and a good cast.

(9) Pulse (Best)

What makes this movie good is the idea. The dead using technology to invade the world of living while killing off its inhabitants. Yeah, the characters aren’t as compelling as they could’ve been but growing tension, creepy atmosphere, good concept. Besides, I do like Kristen Bell and think she gives a solid performance.

(10) The Descent (Worst)

What messes the movie up is just how bad the writing is and how stupid the characters are. The creatures themselves, although impressive, are inconsistent with their actions. The characters make dumb decisions. It does have atmosphere and the claustrophobia works well but when you have stupid characters doing stupid things and creatures who kill because the script says so and not because of how they actually act, it hurts the movie.
