Whether you crave a chilling scare or a moving love story, these picks have something to sink your teeth into.

5-Star Ranking – Best of the Best

  • Interview with the Vampire (1994) – Although not a perfect adaptation, this film has a lot going for it. Paranormal drama mixed with horror presented by a fantastic cast, memorable characters, great writing and direction make this one of the best vampire films.

4-Star Ranking – Top 10 Worthy

  • Fright Night (2011) – A thrilling and modern take on the classic vampire story, the film features a grounded plot that keeps the supernatural elements believable, supported by a stellar cast, including Colin Farrell’s menacing portrayal of the vampire next door. The characters are engaging, the action is fast-paced and fun, and the soundtrack adds to the film’s edgy atmosphere.
  • Stake Land (2010) – A gripping post-apocalyptic vampire film that delivers a compelling blend of horror and drama. With well-developed characters, a solid story, and impressive effects, it immerses viewers in a bleak yet captivating world. Its unique take on the vampire genre makes it a standout choice for horror fans.

3-Star Ranking – Entertaining Watch

  • Underworld: Awakening (2012) – I initially didn’t like this film but upon second viewing really appreciated the story. Despite the lack of Michael (Scott Speedman), the film does have a good story, a super werewolf, and vampire Selene doing some really cool stuff.
  • Innocent Blood (1992) – A stylish blend of mafia drama and vampire horror, delivering bloody thrills and a captivating lead. While the character Joseph falls flat, the strong performances and dynamic cast make up for it. This cult classic offers a unique mix of crime, supernatural allure, and dark humor.
  • Vampires: Los Muertos (2002) – Serving as a loose sequel to Vampires the film follows a new slayer, Derek Bliss, on a mission to stop a vampire cult. While it lacks the intensity of its predecessor, the film delivers decent action and vampire lore, making it an enjoyable, if modest, supernatural adventure.

2-Star Ranking – Could’ve Been Better

  • A Girl Walks Home Along At Night (2014) – This film had so much potential, however, despite the stylized way that it’s shot most of the film is our main lead awkwardly starring at people and not saying anything. Outside of the main lead’s performance, a scene involving a boy with a skateboard, this movie was a complete bore.

1-Star Ranking – Total Garbage

  • Def by Temptation (1990) – I’m always happy to see Black Cinema dive into such genres, however, this film was ridiculous. The plot was decent and with a more talented writer and director, could’ve been a homerun. I like seeing the vampire bits, but it felt more like an acid trip.
  • Bloodz vs. Wolves (2006) – I was looking for this being a great film (mostly because of the cover) however this is one of the worst films I’ve ever seen. Yeah, it’s low budget but that means the writing and acting have to be on point, and boy was this painful.
  • Dracula III: Legacy (2005) – Much like its predecessor this film is nonsensical. It does have a good set up, but the payoff is absolutely dumb, the characters are absolutely dumb, the writing is absolutely dumb and inconsistent. One of the worst movies even Rutger Hauer.
