Attack on Titan (Season 1) | NarikChase Review

For the most part I think the first season of Attack on Titan exceeded my expectations. Season one introduces us to Eren Jaeger, Mikasa Ackerman, and Armin Arlert who witness the threat of the Titans firsthand, when a Colossal Titan appears and breaches the wall surrounding their home. In the aftermath, of the breach Eren’s mother is killed along with countless others when Titans come through the breach.

The first episode is pretty intense and seeing Eren watch his mother die is definitely a sad, which definitely sets the mood for the rest of the series. Because of this, Eren does come off as a pretty flat character wanting only revenge (which is understandable) however, his character would’ve benefited from from character development. Armin unfortunately is just plan useless, doing really nothing of significance. Of the three Mikasa is the memorable. She has the best moments, kicks the most ass, and fights without hesitating (because whenever others hesitate people tend to die).

There are a lot of other characters. Of course I have to focus on Captain Levi Ackerman, Annie Leohart and Zoe Hange, each with their own genuine personality that makes them stand out against the masses. I honestly, don’t feel connected to a majority of the characters because they either have lackluster motivations, have no personality, or get killed off too soon.

I have to admit that I love the opening theme. It’s fast paced and straight up badass setting up for all the action the anime has to offer. The song is called Crimson Bow and Arrow and it’s performed by Revo of Linked Horizon.

Aside from the “normal” Titans the season features three antagonistic forces. The Colossal Titan who breached the first wall, the Armored Titan who breached the second wall, and the Female Titan who shows up in the later half of the season. Eren is revealed to be able to shift into a Titan as well as Annie, who’s the Female Titan. It’s revealed that some people have the ability to shift into Titans, leaving the open question as to who are the Colossal and Armored Titans?

The episodes are actually pretty fast paced although Eren, Armin, and Mikasa’s training segment felt slow as hell. I wanted to see more about fighting the Titans but oh well.

The Verdict: In the end, the first season of Attack on Titan is hands down awesome. I love the premise and execution. Aside from the lacking characterization of a lot of the supporting cast and some pacing issues I think Attack on Titan season 1 is a solid 4 out of 5.
