Dragon Powers and Abilities in Fiction

The creature dragon not only often appears in novels, but also appears in some daily necessities. It is common for dragon fans to collect anything related to dragons. Thus, they will order personalized lapel pins, key chains, belt buckles, and other goods from GS-JJ.com. Of course, if you are a fan of other animals, you can also go here to custom pins.

This list was inspired by the List of Vampire Traits in Folklore and Fiction on Wikipedia, albeit a few modifications.

Supernatural Powers

  • Super strength – Dragons have increased strength which is based on whether their abilities derive from their physiology or by supernatural means.
  • Super durability – Dragons are usually covered in scales, that make them highly resistant to injury.  Again, this depends on whether their abilities derive from their physiology or by supernatural means.
  • Fire Breathing – A common ability that many dragons display is the ability to breath fire. This can be because of magic or glands within their mouths.
  • Venom – Some form of dragons have the ability to breath venom, which can take multiple forms including, a poisonous miasma, an corrosive substance, or even a poisonous bite.
  • Flight – Dragons can fly, either with their wings or through supernatural means such as the case of the Eastern types.
  • Magic – Dragons are notorious for using magic as some are born from it, especially Eastern dragons.  DragonBall Z‘s Eternal Dragon Shenron has the power to grant wishes although there are limitations to what kinds and how many.
  • Immortality – Dragons can live a long time, some even forever.
  • Hibernate – A lot of creatures can hibernate especially if there’s a lack of food or if they’re immortal and just plan bored.

Weaknesses

  • Mortality – Unlike Western and Eastern dragons, wyverns don’t rely on magic and are as susceptible to injury and death as any other creature.  However, most non-magically endowed creatures would die.
  • Obsidian – A dark material capable of penetrating dragon armor.
  • Life Cycle – Dragons have a life cycle like any other creatures.  Some dragons can live 100 years.  Some 1,500 years.  Some even can live 10,000.  But in the end, age catches up with us all.

Appearance

  • Wings – Most Western-style dragons have a set of wings.
  • Fangs – Dragons are fearsome and a toothy smile makes them all the more intimidating.
  • Claws – Dragons have claws to catch their prey and to look badass.
  • Tails – Most dragons have tails which help’s their balance and can be used as a weapon.
  • Horns – Hey, what’s a dragon with no horns.
  • Scales – Since most dragons are depicted as reptilian, it’s only natural that we see them with scales.
  • Humanoid – Some versions of dragons can take the shape and form of a human.  Volga from the 2014 Hyrule Warriors game is a humanoid version of Volvagia from Ocarina of Time.
  • Eyes – Dragons have eyes just like any other creatures though some might not have any or have multiple sets.  Of course, there are the differing colors.
  • Fur/Hair – Some dragons have fur.  I particularly like the ones with beards and fur lining on their forearms.

Reproduction

  • Fertile – Dragons can reproduce like any other species, but usually are birthed from eggs like most other reptiles and reptiles.  Most of the time you’ll see dragon nests with large eggs in them.
  • Live Birth – Some dragons are able to give live births much like humans and mammals.
  • Host – In The Obsidian Chronicles series, dragons gestate inside hosts for a 1,000 years (thereby extending the hosts’ lifespan by a 1,000 years).

Feeding

  • Self-Sustenance – Asian dragons are usually depicted not eating at all due to their magical origins.
  • Food – These eat like any other creatures.  Some are herbivores (eating plants), some are carnivores (eating meat), and some are omnivores (eat both plants and meat).

Setting Characteristics

  • Different Types – Are there different types of dragons?  Wyverns? Elementals? Terrain-based types?
  • Society Against Dragons or For Dragons – Is there a organization that’s dedicated to protecting dragons or slaying them?  Perhaps there’s a secret circle of dragons running the show behind the scenes?
  • Known to Society – Are dragons known to society? Or are they the thing of legend? Are humans able to communicate with them?
