Top 10 Movies of 2017

There are a host of great movies and 2017 has delivered its fair share.  Being more consistent with the movies list that is going to build to the 2018 Narik Chase Movie Awards.  This is a post that’s listing the top 10 best movies of 2017.  Note: this list will be updated accordingly.

10. Get Out

The film follows Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya), a black man who visits the family of his white girlfriend Rose Armitage (Allison Williams); at their home, where he sees the servants are black and act strangely.  This movie is straight up original in it’s focus of certain themes as well as its concept.  Get Out shocked the world with its direction, story, and score.  Of course, there is also the talented cast.

Director: Jordan Peele

9. Wind River

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service tracker Cory Lambert (Jeremy Renner) and an FBI agent Jane Banner (Elizabeth Olsen), try to solve a murder on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming after discovering the frozen body of a 18-year-old woman.  The two leads are just awesome and the story gradually unfolds, and that makes for a great murder mystery.  Also, this is a beautiful looking film with the wide shots of the wilderness.

Director: Taylor Sheridan

8. Blade Runner 2049

Officer K (Ryan Gosling), a new blade runner for the Los Angeles Police Department, unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. His discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former blade runner who’s been missing for 30 years.  This movie has great direction and for a mystery sequel thirty years in the making it’s good, especially since I didn’t really like the first movie.  Loved many of the characters who I thought were really interesting as well as Gosling’s performance.

Director: Denis Veilleneuve

7. Justice League

In the memory of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman form a superhero team to save earth from the catastrophic threat of Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons.  Yeah, the movie has its share of problems, but the characters, action, and performances aren’t one of them.  But one word defines this movie and that word is entertaining.  Loved the direction of the movie and the characters and performances are just awesome.

Director: Zack Snyder

6. Wonder Woman

When a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, Diana, an Amazonian warrior in training, leaves home to fight a war, discovering her full powers and true destiny.  This is the first significant superhero movie with a strong female lead and it is awesome.  For all of those haters you question Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, she rocks the character.  Hell, even the supporting cast is awesome.  Chris Pine definitely deserves a thumbs up.

Director: Patty Jenkins

5. What Happened to Monday

In a world where families are limited to one child due to overpopulation, a set of identical septuplets must avoid being put to a long sleep by the government and dangerous infighting while investigating the disappearance of one of their own.  A great, original story with awesome performances by Noomi Rapace who plays several characters.

Director: Tommy Wirkola

4. Thor: Ragnarok

Imprisoned, the almighty Thor finds himself in a lethal gladiatorial contest against the Hulk, his former ally. Thor must fight for survival and race against time to prevent the all-powerful Hela from destroying his home and the Asgardian civilization.  Action packed, funny, and moving, Thor: Ragnarok is easily the best Thor movie in the franchise and with it’s great characters makes it a good MCU movie that should be watched.

Director: Taika Waititi

3. It

A group of bullied kids band together when a shapeshifting monster, taking the appearance of a clown, begins hunting children.  This movie proves that some remakes are worth the effort.  Breaking all kinds of records, and becoming the highest grossing horror movie of all time, it’s easily one of the best horror movies made recently.  Not only are the performances good but Skarsgaard completely killed the role of Pennywise.

Director: Andy Muschietti

2. Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi

The plot follows Rey as she receives Jedi training from Luke Skywalker, in hopes of turning the tide for the Resistance in the fight against Kylo Ren and the First Order.  What makes this movie standout is how well the story is told.  How well the emotional scenes impact you.  Then there is the strong developing arcs for the characters in a way that’s never really been done in the films.

Director: Rian Johnson

1. War for the Planet of the Apes

After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind.  Why this movie makes number one is not only how well the visuals look but how well the storytelling is.  We’ve watched Caesar grow into his own and lead his species to safety in a world that’s prejudices hold it back.  By the end of the movie it feels like the end of one story and the beginning of something new.

Director: Matt Reeves
