Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood is a 2003 black comedy horror film directed by Steven Ayromlooi, starring Warwick Davis, Tangi Miller, Laz Alonso, Page Kennedy, and Sherrie Jackson. It is the sixth installment in the Leprechaun horror film series and follows the villainous Leprechaun rampaging through a town looking for his gold, which was stolen by a group of urban youths.
Positives:
- Interesting premise
Negatives:
- Poor performances
- Shitty script
- Worst direction
- Poor humor
- Poor characters
- Poor music
- Choppy editing
- Bad dialogue
- Uneventful story
Plot: Four urban youths (they’re not youths) finding and spending the leprechaun’s gold is a decent story. There’s this romance subplot between Lisa and Jamie and it is completely forced and rushed. There is the conflict between Rory and Watson that doesn’t feel important. Emily’s previous relationship with Rory doesn’t get enough light to make it compelling. All in all, most of the supporting subplots feel generic. The intro is actually pretty good giving the best origin story for the leprechaun. The ending leaves so much to be desired. (1 out of 5)
Characters: Most of the characters (both main and supporting) are just flat with no depth to them and complete stereotypes. Most of them don’t have much motivation nor have anything going in their lives. Emily is a good character, motivated by her need to leave the hood. Okay, that’s a pretty good motivation. However, when the jackass actually gets a means to do it, she doesn’t do it. Emily and Lisa have great chemistry together and feel like really good friends. Lisa isn’t a bad character but feels more like a sidekick. Rory is decent but a total cliche and an unnecessary love interest. Jamie is a terrible character. He’s such a dumbass and a waste of space and literally acts like. The romance between him and Lisa is totally forced. There are some rival drug dealers and cops that don’t really like Rory (because he’s a jackass) and they are the most cartoony characters in the movie. (2 out of 5)
Cast: The performances are decent but definitely not memorable. Warwick Davis is good but offers nothing new. Tangi Miller is decent as Emily but definitely cannot pull emotion to save her life. Everyone else pretty much sucks. The supporting cast consists of Laz Alonso (Rory), Page Kennedy (Jamie), Sherrie Jackson (Lisa), Donzaleigh Abernathy (Esmeralda), Shiek Mahmud-Bey (Watson), Sticky Fingaz (Cedric), Keesha Sharp (Chanel), Sonya Eddy (Yolanda), Beau Billingslea (Officer Thompson), Chris Murray (Officer Whitaker), Vickilyn Reynolds (Doria), and Willie C. Carpenter (Father Jacob). (2 out of 5)
Visuals: Really effects are just good enough to pass the test. There isn’t an over abundance of gore and for the sequences that do have it, it’s decent. A lot of the kills feel lazy and uneventful. The Leprechaun costume and makeup design looks good but doesn’t offer anything new to the series. (3 out of 5)
Score: The music is absolutely terrible. Even if the film is a direct-to-video, it doesn’t have to sound like one. I have no words for Michael Whittaker when it comes to the score. Complete thumbs down. (1 out of 5)
Writing: The dialogue…is really bad. There are some things said in this movie that are just plain…stupid. There are several sequences in which convenience is a problem. Also, the movie is just ridiculous on so many levels. Sure, the series is seen more as a comedy horror but they could’ve at least tried to take this serious. Like the previous films, there is no consistency whatsoever, and nothing from any of the other films is brought up. None of the people, none of the Leprechaun’s weaknesses or strengths, none of the events; nothing that connects it to the other films. Honestly, after watching this, director Steven Ayromlooi probably should never take the reigns again, not as a writer nor a director. What relationship that’s suppose to be between the actors and the director, is clearly not there. The performances are perhaps the weakest aspect next to this dumbass writing. Warwick’s delivery of his lines are pretty good as only he can deliver. Much of the dialogue is pretty poorly written. There’s no moment in the movie that’s moving. There’s one scene that completely baffles me and that’s the sequence where the Leprechaun kills Jaime. Why? He doesn’t question her about his gold. He just kills her, and she’s probably the most likable character of the cast. (1 out of 5)
The Verdict: In the end, Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood is one of those movies that no one ever wanted. Every aspect of this movie is garbage and it has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. It’s clear most of the people involved didn’t give a crap about this movie and whoever greenlit it should be shaking their head with shame. No one should see this movie and this movie like the previous destroyed the franchise. Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood barely gets 2 out of 5.
