The Darkstalkers series is one of the many franchises that unfortunately aren’t getting their just due these days. Sure with some of the hard hitters coming out for every new console gen as well as the new wave of game franchises rolling, the market can be more than a little intimidating. However, for those franchises that are stuck in the middle or have been shelved, they still have potential. As well as their respective fan bases.
Capcom is one of the legendary studios that helped usher in gaming revolution. Like Nintendo, they have their franchises that have guided their company to the top. Two of the biggest example of this are the Street Fighter and Resident Evil franchises.
I found an interesting article with Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono which gives some incite into how the company perceives what games should have a sequel as well as how a game is measured in success. Be sure to check out this article: Here’s Why Capcom Isn’t Making A New Darkstalkers.
Now, I’m quite sure I’m not the only fan that has asked themself this question. With all of these fighting game franchises being released for the new gen systems there is little reason as to why Darkstalkers shouldn’t get its chance. Video game reboots have been proven to resuscitate game franchises. The biggest example is 2013’s Tomb Raider. Nobody gave a crap about Tomb Raider, and in fact, the series was going downhill. Now, with the reboot the series has flourished even producing a sequel and going as far as pushing the Tomb Raider movie reboot.
Admittedly, in recent years Capcom have not been known for their smart decisions. In fact, over the years they have made some of the most annoying decisions that are borderline criminal. Shelving great franchises for no reason, engaging in bullshit DLC practices, locking content in on the disc, and creating some really crappy games regardless of fan input. Hell, it’s sad to say that the closest thing we have to a new game is Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.
Darkstalkers definitely deserves a reboot, especially the way fighting games are looking these days. Some really good examples of this is 2011’s Mortal Kombat and it’s sequel Mortal Kombat X, Injustice: Gods Among Us and Injustice 2, Tekken 7, 2013’s Killer Instinct, and of course Street Fighter 5. The series does have an anime series and it would be awesome to have the strong narrative driven campaign that allows players to fight with the series’ best and see where these characters are in the overall scheme.
There are many other posts across the web going into better depth about what is going on with the franchise. And there are a large number of possibilities for the franchise going forward. But if these other great franchises can keep up, so can Darkstalkers. Capcom, get your shit together.
