Now the Fallout series has been praised as one of the greatest video game series of all time. Now, having said that, the series has gotten somewhat repetitive in the gameplay mechanics. Every game follows a human in a world ruined by nuclear devastation trying to survive while going on a quest of personal interest while being caught up in a bigger struggle. This post is going to highlight three really good ideas that might change up the formula a little bit.
1. 1-to-4 Online Co-Op
At this point in the game, Fallout is more than overdue for a multiplayer/co-op mode. And I’m not talking about the massive online multiplayer either. I mean a good online co-op. Especially with how frustrating and broken the companion system is. Fallout needs to take page from the Borderlands series.
Either the game can be played alone or support up to three additional players cooperatively online. The game should follow the progress of the host player, rewarding the other active players for completion of quests for their characters while the mission remains the same in their own campaign. The gameplay should definitely become harder the more players are present to provide a good challenge and to keep the group from mowing down enemies with ease. Perhaps generating more enemies could be a possibility.
2. Multiple Playable Characters
Now this would definitely spice up the gameplay. Having the story support more than one main character with their own personalities, backstories, quests, and specific skill sets. Not only would this actually make the game more immersive because different characters can see and approach the world in different ways. Should the three be played individually or as a group? I think individually would suffice.
Think about it. Have three characters; one a raider, one from a vault, and one merchant. Players should be able to change up the three characters stats, skills, and attributes as they level up as well as maintain some attributes and skills that the other characters don’t have. Maybe have one character focus on strength and guns and be the offensive character, while another can be focused on sneaking and lockpicking. Possibly have the third character focus on intelligence and weapons crafting. Or make all three of them offensive.
This also brings up a good point. If there are three characters should they level up the same or individually. Personally, I think individually because players can take the time to actually build the characters and their personalities.
3. Main Character Can Cross Species
One of the most interesting ideas that can make replayability a great point would be players crossing over to different species. This can easily give single players a terrific multiple campaign experience. Three species that easily come to mind are synths, ghouls, and super mutants. How would the gameplay change with each species. Maybe there is a dilemma in which the player is given an option to change species to increase their chances of accomplishing something or as a punishment. Think about it. The player can choose to stay human and be given the perks, limitations, and strengths of a human. Also, being a human allows them to communicate and interact with other humans easier.
What happens if players are transformed into super mutants? Super mutants are mutated humans, products of infection by the Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV). Players are given the ability to interact with other super mutants, mutant hounds, and centaurs as well as their variants (Nightkin). Also, super mutants have increased strength and endurance as well as immunity to radiation and disease (which could be utilized to combat poisoning).
What would be the perks of a ghoul? Ghouls or necrotic post-humans, are decrepit, rotting, zombie-like mutants. They are recipients of intense and prolonged radiation sickness which decays their skin, and in some cases their ligaments. Players are able to have longer amounts of stamina so V.A.T.S. would have more points. Of course, the ability to communicate with other ghouls as well as the ghouls ones. Even, the ability to summon or subjugate other feral ghouls. Also, of course immunity to radiation as well as being healed by it.
And lastly another “species” that should be considered is perhaps the synths. Synth is a diminutive for synthetic humanoid and is used to name synthetic intelligence units designed by the Institute to look, function and behave like humans. They are sometimes also called androids or artificial humans.
