Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is a 2016 science fiction action horror film directed by Paul W. S. Loosely based on the video game series of the same name, serving as the sixth and final installment in the Resident Evil film series the film follows Alice and her friends who are betrayed by Albert Wesker, who gathers the entire forces of Umbrella into one final strike against the apocalypse survivors.
Positives:
- Great characters
- Great music
- Great use of pratical, makeup, and CGI
- Great action
- Good performances
- Interesting story
Negatives:
- Poor script
- Lackluster characters
Plot: Story follows Alice and her friends who are betrayed by Albert Wesker, who gathers the entire forces of Umbrella into one final strike against the apocalypse survivors. The story is interesting though it is ridiculous at times. Umbrella leading the charge to exterminate the remaining survivors is kind of dumb. Alice’s origin story is interesting and it does a good job of tying the series. (3 out of 5)
Characters: There are some pretty cool characters. Alice (Jovovich) is the main protagonist and returns to Raccoon City to stop the extermination of humanity. Claire (Larter) is a supporting character who aids Alice. One of the best new characters introduced in the film (though isn’t nearly as prominent as he could’ve been) is Commander Chu (Lee Joon-gi). The dude was brutal and proved himself to be the anti-Alice counterpart. Other great characters are Abigail (Rose) and Christian (Levy) even though the two lacked any decent amount of screentime. Wesker (Roberts) shouldn’t have been in the movie. Wesker should’ve been the main antagonist instead of Isaacs (Glen) who should’ve never been in the movie. Infact, the original Isaacs should’ve been replaced by Wesker while the Isaacs clone should’ve been replaced by Commander Chu. (3 out of 5)
Cast: Great job by Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, and Iain Glen. Jovovich and Larter are just great together. Shawn Roberts has almost nothing to do and shouldn’t have even been in the film. Other good performances include Ruby Rose, Eoin Macken, and William Levy. Love Ian Glen, he’s a great actor, but he shouldn’t have been cast in the film. (3 out of 5)
Visuals: Great use of practical, makeup, and CGI. The creature designs look really cool, especially that one B.O.W. with all the teeth as well as the giant flying B.O.W. The set pieces do look really good. Honestly, this is a very good looking show. (4 out of 5)
Score: Again, the score is absolutely amazing. Paul Haslinger does a great job. (4 out of 5)
Writing: The writing is good but at the same time could’ve been leagues better. Paul W. S. Anderson does a decent job with the film but there are times where a person will slap themselves in the forehead in frustration. Isaacs is one of the best characters but the fact that he was the main antagonist of the film just sucks and reinforces the problem with the clone idea. Wesker could’ve easily been the main antagonist to take on Alice which leads to sucky writing. There are so many character deaths that don’t make any sense or is completely rushed. Abigail, Christian, Razor, and Commander Chu are such characters. One of the best sequences of the film is the tower attack where the survivors are defending themselves from Umbrella forces and zombies. As much as the film emphasizes Alice’s return to the Hive, it doesn’t feel like the Hive. There’s only like two scenes where the area feels like the Hive. (3 out of 5)
The Verdict: In the end, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is a good film just not a great one. Like previous installments, the film suffers from lackluster characters and a poorly written script. However, there are good performances as well as good visuals, a good cast, great action, an interesting story, and a great score. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter gets 3 out of 5.
