How to Create a Fictional City!

While researching information for a story I thought to myself, why not make a guide to city building.  There are tons of sites and guides on the web and in the book stores that I drew inspiration from.

A city is a large human settlement that generally have complex systems for sanitation, utilities, land usage, housing, and transportation.

Basic Information:

  • Does the city have a nickname?
  • Flag, seal, and coat of arms?
  • What country, region, sub-region is the city located?
  • What date was the city established?
  • What is the city’s population?
  • Official language(s)?
  • How large is the city?
  • Is it built upward? Or is it built outward?
  • Sister Cities:

Cityscape is an artistic or visual representation of the physical aspects of a city or urban area.

  • Does the city have any prominent features?
  • Architecture?
  • Parks and landmarks?
  • Are there any skyscrapers?

Transport infrastructure consists of the fixed installations including roads, railways, airways, and waterways.

  • Railway: Metro, monorail, transit system, tram, trolleybus,
  • Air Travel: Airport, helicopters
  • Ground Travel: Roads, freeways and interstates, cycling
  • Public Transport: Special vehicles, taxi, uber, bus, cable car, trains
  • Water Travel: Port, ferry, shipping, sea, waterways, canals, watercraft

The economy consist of the production, distribution, or trade and the consumption of goods and services by different agents (individuals, businesses, organizations, or government) in a given area (in which this post is focused on the city economics).

Government is the system by which a state or community is controlled, where policy is enforced, usually consisting of legislators, administrators, and arbitrators. Government controls the economy, social freedoms, and political systems.

Geography is the systematic study of the Earth and its features. This will also focus on the man-made surroundings that provide the setting for human activity, ranging in scale from buildings to parks.

  • Is the city below sea level? Above sea level?

Health and Safety:

Crime and Law Enforcement:

  • How many precincts are there?
  • How many number of officers are there?

Life and Culture:

  • Overview?
  • Are there any cultural institutions?
  • Are there any research institutions?
  • What kind of night life is there? Clubs, bars, and/or casinos?
  • What types of cuisine does the city have?

Sports are activities involving physical exertion and skill in which individuals or teams compete against others for entertainment.

  • Baseball is a ball game played between two teams of nine on a field with a diamond-shaped circuit of four bases. College
  • Football is a form of team game played in North America with an oval ball on a field marked out as a gridiron.
  • Hockey is a game played between two teams of eleven players who use hooked sticks to drive a small hard ball toward goals at opposite ends of a field. Ice hockey or field hockey?
  • Soccer is a game played by two teams of eleven players with a round ball that may not be touched with the hands or arms during play except by the goalkeepers. The object of the game is to score goals by kicking or heading the ball into the opponents’ goal.
  • Basketball is a game played between two teams of five players in which goals are scored by throwing a ball through a netted hoop fixed above each end of the court.
  • Rugby is a team game played with an oval ball that may be kicked, carried, and passed from hand to hand. Points are scored by grounding the ball behind the opponents’ goal line (thereby scoring a try) or by kicking it between the two posts and over the crossbar of the opponents’ goal.

Communication media, or the specialized mass media communication businesses such as print media and the press, photography, advertising, cinema, broadcasting (radio and television) and publishing.

Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits.  Methods include storytelling, discussion, teaching, training, and directed research.

Infrastructure refers to the fundamental facilities and systems serving a country, city, or area, including the services and facilities necessary for its economy to function. It typically characterises technical structures such as roads, bridges, tunnels, water supply, sewers, electrical grids, telecommunications, and so forth, and can be defined as “the physical components of interrelated systems providing commodities and services essential to enable, sustain, or enhance societal living conditions.”Telecommunications?

  • Electricity generation is the process of generating electric power from sources of primary energy (electric utilities, transmission, distribution, or energy storage).
  • Water supply system or water supply network is a system of engineered hydrologic and hydraulic components which provide water supply (water purification, water storage).

Districts include several municipalities, subdivisions of municipalities, school district, or political district. Suburbs is a residential area or a mixed use area, either existing as part of a city or urban area or as a separate residential community within commuting distance of a city.

Organized crime is a category of transnational, national, or local groupings of highly centralized enterprises run by criminals who intend to engage in illegal activity, most commonly for money and profit but also motivated. A criminal organization or gang can also be referred to as a mafia, mob, or crime syndicate. The network, subculture and community of criminals may be referred to as the underworld.
