Top 20 Best & Worst Ghost Films Pt.2

Coming at you guys with another top 20 post on the best and worst ghost films.  There are so many that it would be a crime not to do another list.  This list will include ghost films that aren’t necessarily horror but a wide variety of genres.

 1. Shutter (Best)

A newly married couple discovers disturbing, ghostly images in photographs they develop after a tragic accident. Fearing the manifestations may be connected, they investigate and learn that some mysteries are better left unsolved.  Shutter does something that I love in these types of films.  It’s subtle.  And that makes for a very creepy horror film.

Release Date: 2008

2. The Haunted Mansion (Best)

A realtor and his wife and children are summoned to a mansion, which they soon discover is haunted, and while they attempt to escape, he learns an important lesson about the family he has neglected.  Initially during my first viewing, I didn’t like this film.  However, after re-watching it I thought it was entertaining as a family film. It was fun and great seeing Eddie Murphy in this type of role.

Release Date: 2003

3. Dead Silence (Best)

A young widower returns to his hometown to search for answers to his wife’s murder, which may be linked to the ghost of a murdered ventriloquist.  If there’s one thing this film has, it’s tension.  There are these great moments where there’s literally no sound and it just makes things creepy as hell.  Not to mention Mary Shaw is a fucking scary looking woman.

Release Date: 2007

4. The Fog (Worst)

A thick mist full of vengeful spirits haunts a prosperous island town off the coast of Oregon, as its inhabitants try to learn their town’s dark secret in order to stop it.  What hurts this film more than anything is its poorly written cast of the modern day stereotypes that have become the norm of horror movies.  Not to mention they rely heavily on special effects rather than memorable kills.

Release Date: 2005

5. The Grudge 2 (Best)

Three interwoven stories about a terrible curse. A young woman encounters a malevolent supernatural force while searching for her missing sister in Tokyo; a mean high school prank goes horribly wrong; a woman with a deadly secret moves into a Chicago apartment building.  If you want a horror movie sequel that’s as good as the first, this is your movie.  Sure, the story isn’t the best but its got the chills to make the hairs stand on end.

Release Date: 2006

6. Darkness Falls (Best)

A vengeful spirit has taken the form of the Tooth Fairy to exact vengeance on the town that lynched her 150 years earlier. Her only opposition is the only child, now grown up, who has survived her before.  A fucking awesome movie that gives a new interpretation to the Tooth Fairy.

Release Date: 2003

7. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (Best)

A scientist makes a last stand on Earth with the help of a ragtag team of soldiers against an invasion of alien phantoms.  Probably one of the most original ideas on this list.  The phantoms are the spirits of dead aliens that like sucking the souls out of the living.

Release Date: 2001

8. Ghosts of Mars (Worst)

In 2176, a Martian police unit is sent to pick up a highly dangerous criminal at a remote mining post. Upon arrival, the cops find that the post has become a charnel house.

Release Date: 2001

9. Poltergeist (Best)

Release Date: 1982

10. Rings (Worst)

Release Date: 2017

11. The Woman in Black: Angel of Death (Worst)

Release Date: 2014

12. Friend Request (Best)

When a college student unfriends a mysterious girl online, she finds herself fighting a demonic presence that wants to make her lonely by killing her closest friends.

Release Date: 2016

13. Unfriended (Best)

A group of online chat room friends find themselves haunted by a mysterious, supernatural force using the account of their dead friend.

Release Date: 2014

14. Insidious: Chapter 2 (Best)

The Lamberts believe that they have defeated the spirits that have haunted their family, but they soon discover that evil is not beaten so easily.

Release Date: 2013

15. Bleach (Best)

Ichigo Kurosaki is a High School student, living in Karakura town. He is able to see ghosts, as well as hollows. Later, he meets up with Rukia Kuchiki, a Death God or Soul Reaper (Shinigami in Japanese). Later, he finds out that he himself is a Soul Reaper as well. Ichigo Kurosaki, now with the power of a Soul Reaper, is able to protect Karakura town from hollows.

Release Date: 2018

16. Last Shift (Best)

A rookie cop’s 1st shift alone in the last night of a closing police station turns into a living nightmare.

Release Date: 2014

17. American Poltergeist (Worst)

A group of friends move into a vacation home with a sinister past in Fall River, Massachusetts. Suspicious of the home’s owner, Taryn feels a strong connection to the house and finds herself at the center of one of the most deadly poltergeists in American history.

Release Date: 2015

18. Stay Alive (Worst)

Release Date: 2006

19. The Haunting of Helena (Best)
