Werewolves in Fiction and Folklore

What are werewolves (lycanthrope) and why are they so important? Werewolves, or lycanthrope, are mythological humans with the ability to shapeshift into wolf or hybrid wolf-like creatures either purposely or under a curse.  Men and women able to transform into a wolf or man/wolf hybrid usually resulting in a merciless killing machine. Born from folklore, werewolves are the result of disease, curse, or magic.  This post will focus on different examples including those in literature, film, television, comics, animation, and video games.
