Top 25 Video Game Villains

Games have their good guys but they definitely have their villains.  Whether their goals are for revenge, world domination, total destruction, or ultimate power, these guys aren’t playing around.

25. Superman (Injustice: Gods Among Us, Injustice 2)

Formerly the world’s mightiest superhero the tyrant is born after the death of his wife, Lois Lane, through the mechanizations of the Joker.  What he evolves into is a tyrant bent on world peace by any means necessary.  And he delivers with a strong fist with leagues of heroes and villains under his command.

24. Osmund Saddler (Resident Evil 4)

Charming, cunning, and dangerous, Saddler is one of the most pronounced villains of the Resident Evil mythos.  What makes him such an interesting villain is the fact that he has presence and personality.

23. Nemesis (Resident Evil 3: Nemesis)

If there was one guy on this list that deserved to be on here it is the tyrant Nemesis.  He is the hulking behemoth in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis that pursues Jill Valentine relentlessly throughout Raccoon City.  How can you kill something that doesn’t stop?  How can you kill something that is seemingly unkillable?

22. Sin (Final Fantasy X)

Who in the hell thought of this idea?  It’s fantastic.  A giant demonic fish who goes around terrorizing the world.  That’s pretty much what Sin is.  A culmination of a cycle started a thousand years previously Sin is the juggernaut that can literally destroy the world.  Even it’s presence is enough to destroy cities…or enough to summon a bunch of monsters to destroy those cities.

21. Bowser (Super Mario)

The King of the Koopas is next on the list and rightfully so. It isn’t enough that he rules the  koopas but he has to have a bride at his side.

20. Pagan Min (Far Cry 4)

Charming as he is dangerous, Min makes this list simply because of his great personality.  The man is thoughtful and charismatic and although is responsible of all the death and destruction in the wake of the civil war ravaging the fictional Kyrat, you can’t help but listen to what the man has to say.  Despite his obvious tyranny he does show a soft spot for the main protagonist.

19. Bloody Mary (The Wolf Among Us)

The Wolf Among Us features a great cast of characters both good, bad, and indifferent; but no one is as bad as Bloody Mary.  One of the few characters who not only doesn’t fear Bigby but actually is a major threat to him.  She’s mean with an axe and truly sadistic, but when she actually lets loose she becomes a true horror.

18. Diablo (Diablo)

Al’Daibalos, the Lord of Terror, also commonly known as Diablo, is one of the few demonic figures to actually shake the gaming world to its core.  One of the three Prime Evils, Diablo is cunnning, smart, and extremely patient, latching onto the fears of his victims and drinking in their terror as if it were a fine wine.

17. Officer Frank Tenpenny (Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas)

If there ever was a cop in a video game that’s a total dick, it’s Officer Tenpenny.  This corrupt cop sends C.J. all over the Los Santos killing rivals, collecting and distributing drugs, and all kinds of wild crap.  While a total douchebag, he definitely has the Samuel L. Jackson flare that can make him both humorous and dangerous at the same time.

16. Conrad Kellogg (Fallout 4)

Kellogg, Kellogg, Kellogg.  Very few characters have managed to be as standout and as badass as the mysterious Kellogg.  Although responsible for the death of the Sole Survivor’s spouse as well as the kidnapping of their child, Kellogg has definitely managed to take the story to a personal level.  But hey, he wasn’t always a bad guy.  He had a wife and child as well.  Which makes him all the more surprising when you learn about him after his defeat.

15. Xenomorph (Alien: Isolation)

In space, no one can hear you scream.  Well, with the xenomorph, no truer worse were ever spoken.  Alien: Isolation follows Ellen Ripley’s daughter, Amanda, who gets stuck on a damaged space station filled with crazy survivors and killer androids.  And to top it off, a merciless xenomorph is running loose killing everything in its path.  It sucks when you’re stuck in an area locked down with the alien on the prowl.

14. Nightmare (Soulcalibur)

Nightmare is the ultimate Dark Knight.  Cruel, powerful, and merciless, his only goal is to gather souls for the Soul Edge.  He is the host, wielder and living incarnation of the cursed sword often being portrayed as either a possessed Siegfried or animated armor.

13. Alma Wade (F.E.A.R.)

Perhaps the scariest character on this list, Alma Wade was a severely troubled child, gifted with tremendous psychic powers. She seeks revenge against humanity for the series of experiments and secret projects performed on her which led to her death.  Some of her most notable features are her popping up to scare players randomly throughout the game, reality being hallucinations, and the awesome ability of liquefying the flesh from her victims.

12. Albert Wesker (Resident Evil)

What makes Wesker such a villain is his inability to feel emotion, specifically for his fellow man.  Wesker is utterly ruthless when it comes to his goals, killing anyone who gets in his way. And his infection of the virus makes him more deadly.

Who else to bring chaos to the world than the Clown Prince of Crime, the Joker.  He has managed to be a thorn in Batman’s side throughout the entire Batman: Arkham series.  The only villain to truly haunt Batman’s every waking moment.

10. Majora (The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask)

Poor Link.  It seems like he never runs out of enemies to fight.  But few have ever been as strange as Majora.  Majora is a powerful being in the form of a mask who harnesses powerful dark magical forces.  He nearly crashed the moon for Chris sake.

9. Alduin (The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim)

Also known as the World Eater, Alduin is a dragon bent on the destruction of the world. As far as dragons go he’s pretty terrifying and it does help with his alias being the World Eater.

8. Handsome Jack (Borderlands 2)

Jack is the true definition of a tyrannical megalomaniac. Selfish, cunning, manipulative, and utterly ruthless, Jack is as dangerous as he is charming. Not to mention he hhas some of the funniest dialogue.

Vaas is the first main antagonist of the game Far Cry 3 and is terrifyingly likable.  True, he is a murdering psychopath who cares nothing for human life, but the guy definitely has personality.

6. Shao Kahn (Mortal Kombat)

Who else can conquer countless realms and be home in time for dinner.  Shao Kahn is perhaps the most accomplished bad guy on this list.  How many realms has this guy conquered? How many lives extingushed was he responsible for?  What Shao Kahn lacks in personality he does make up in presence and boy does he have tons of it.  Every step he takes makes the world shake, every movement sends hurricanes abound.

5. Akuma (Street Fighter series)

What makes Akuma so iconic a villain is because he isn’t traditional.  He doesn’t kill out of malice, greed, or money.  Akuma’s one goal in life is to face the most powerful opponents he can.

4. Queen Myrrah (Gears of War series)

The Queen of the Locust Horde, her only goal was saving the Locust Horde from the threat of the Lambent.  So focused on her goal she even sent her “people” to wage war against humanity to take the surface world.  She is quite sympathetic actually, aside from the deaths of countless Locust and humans as a direct a result of her decision.

3. Augus (Asura’s Wrath)

Augus is as cool as he is entertaining.  Although partially responsible for Asura’s woes he still sees him as his student and cherishes their moments, though many are combat fueled. Someone who cherishes the riches of life (women, drinking, and fighting) he’s xxtremely fast and powerful. It’s hard to imagine that he’s actually blind.

2. Ganondorf (The Legend of Zelda series)

Ganondorf has taken many forms over the years as he does battle with the angelic Zelda and the courageous Link. Despite his many defeats Ganondorf just keeps coming back, each incarnation deadlier than the last. But he can’t help that he is the reincarnation of evil. Why fight it?

Also featured in:

 1. Sephiroth (Final Fantasy VII)

The number one spot goes to The One Winged Angel. Sephiroth has managed to become one of the most memorable and iconic villains ever to be in a video game. It’s not just the character design or the interesting backstory or even his awesome theme song. Sephiroth is just straight badass on every level. He’s tough, uncaring, and dark. For those who haven’t witnessed how badass he is, evil has never looked cooler. His rivalry with Cloud has even surpassed Final Fantasy VII and branched off into other video games and even into an animated movie.
