The Rezort Review | 31 Days of Halloween 2020

The Rezort is a 2016 zombie horror film directed by Stever Barker, starring Dougray Scott (Mission: Impossible II), Jessica De Gouw (These Final Hours), Martin McCann (The Survivalist), and Claire Goose (Secret Smile).  After a global zombie war, the living dead are confined to a luxury island resort and hunted by tourists on safari — until the security system fails.

Positives:

  • Interesting story
  • Great makeup effects
  • Good performances

Negatives:

  • Lackluster characters
  • Lackluster performances
  • Lackluster characters
  • Poor script
  • Poor direction

Plot: After a global zombie war, the living dead are confined to a luxury island resort and hunted by tourists on safari — until the security system fails. For as interesting a plot as the film is it is incredibly predictable.  Sadie being revealed as an agent of a zombie rights activist group who is responsible for this entire mess was seen a mile away. (3 out of 5)

Characters: Archer (Scott) is the most badass character of the movie.  Melanie (Gouw) is a good character just doesn’t feel like a stable one.  She doesn’t know if she wants to be strong against the zombies, afraid of the zombies, or just sympathetic.  She’s useless in most of her scenes.  Jack (Ahluwalia) was an annoying character but is one that actually becomes likable.  The problem with the film is that the characters have nothing interesting going for them. (3 out of 5)

Cast:  Good performances by the cast but aren’t anything to run home about.  The most prominent is Dougray Scott.  Gouw is a good actress but isn’t given anything to do.  McCann and Goose are good but again have really nothing to do.  Jassa Ahluwalia and Ellen Rhys are good.  (2 out of 5)

Visuals:  The zombie make-up effects look really good though they are the only thing worth admiring.  The set pieces are a bit of a mixed bag.  Of course, they’re decent but aren’t enough to keep the film afloat.  (2 out of 5)

Score:  The score is decent and although Zacarias M. de la Riva does an effective job the music isn’t really memorable. (3 out of 5)

Writing:  The whole setup of the film is actually well established through careful writing.  The Rezort itself does seem plausible.  One issue when it comes to the writing is that there is no buildup.  When things go wrong there isn’t a gradual collapse but an immediate one.  The Rezort’s security system goes down and everyone dies within like five minutes. There aren’t any security measures implemented to prevent the outbreak, no security measures to prevent the entire system from crashing.  There are some convinces in the plot that should’ve been ironed out better.  For example, when the outbreak occurs, the main cast meet no other survivors and let’s just be honest…that’s bullshit.  With all the security, guest, and staff there should’ve been tons of survivors.  Some of the main character deaths are too convenient…including Jack, Sadie, and Nevins.  Poorly written deaths. (1 out of 5)

The Verdict:  In the end, The Rezort is one of the most worst films with the best ideas.  Despite the awesome Dougray Scott, a good story, good makeup effects, and a great setup, the film fails in nearly every aspect.  The Rezort gets 2 out of 5.
