Positives:

  • Good story
  • Good writing
  • Good characters
  • Good art style

Negatives:

  • n/a

Plot: Despite being a small portion of a larger arc, the story follows Kara (Supergirl), Chris (Nightwing), and Thara (Flamebird) who are on the run while trying to clear their names.  Of course, there is Supergirl and her mother, Alura, dealing with the aftermath of the death Kryptonian leader and her father, Mon-El. A great focus on Supergirl’s personal and superhero life.  Then there is the anti-Kryptonian war being waged on Earth. (3 out of 5)

Characters:  The main protagonist are Supergirl, Flamebird, and Nightwing who are all interesting characters.  Supergirl having to deal with the death of her father and the strained relationship with both her mother, Alura, and her best friend, Flamebird, both dealing with Mon-El’s death in their own way.  Reactron is just a total douchebag.  He’s cold, he’s cruel, and he just kicks all kinds of ass.  Definitely has established himself as a credible villain. Other characters that make an appearance is Alura, Lana Lane, and Lois Lane who play good supporting characters.  (4 out of 5)

Art Style:  The art style is definitely on point.  The characters are pretty expressive and the color themes are pretty vibrant.  The action is intense yet impactful.  (3 out of 5)

Writing: Sterling Gates and Greg Rucka do a phenomenal job with the characters and story.  The story has a good pace, given just enough exposition for the characters, while keeping the story pretty engaging on a personal level and on a grand scale.  Supergirl definitely has her own voice despite her story being part of Superman’s.  (4 out of 5)

The Verdict:  In the end, Supergirl: Friends & Fugitives is a really good read.  It does go at a good pace and tell a compelling story.  The characters are good and the focus on Supergirl definitely gives her a voice.  All these combined with the good writing and good art style give Supergirl: Friends & Fugitives 4 out of 5.
