Werewolf Powers and Abilities in Fiction

Werewolves, or lycanthrope, are mythological humans with the ability to shapeshift into wolf or hybrid wolf-like creatures either purposely or under a curse. This list was inspired by the List of Vampire Traits in Folklore and Fiction on Wikipedia, albeit a few modifications.

Supernatural Powers

  • Unnatural Smell
  • Unnatural Strength
  • Unnatural Endurance
  • Unnatural Speed
  • Unnatural Agility
  • Unnatural Healing
  • Immortality
  • Shapeshifting
  • Wallcrawling
  • Night Vision

Weaknesses

  • Silver
  • Wolfsbane
  • Noise – Of course with super hearing comes super sensitivity.
  • Smell – Of course with super scent comes super sensitivity.
  • Fire
  • Decapitation
  • Holy Ground – Never heard of a werewolf that couldn’t walk on holy ground. Hell, the main antagonist of the film Silver Bullet was a werewolf and he was a preacher.
  • Lunar Cycle – Are the werewolf’s abilities limited to the lunar cycle? The farthest he/she is from a full moon the more human he/she is.
  • Mortality

Appearance

  • Locomotion – Is it bipedal or quadrupedal?
  • Snout
  • Claws
  • Fangs
  • Ears
  • Tail
  • Fur

Reproduction

  • Bite
  • Scratch
  • Curse
  • Fertile – Are werewolves fertile in the human or changed state? Is it only men, women, or both?
  • Possession – Some forms of lycanthropy come from possession of a person by a wolf, spirit, or demon.
  • Genetic – Is lycanthropy passed through the bloodline?

Setting Characteristics

  • Moon – Does the moon play a prominent role in the setting?
  • Feral Mind – When a person transforms do they retain their humanity or are they completely bestial?
  • Supernatural Creatures – Are there other supernatural creatures such as Vampires or witches? The show Bitten is mainly focused on werewolves but does feature witches.
  • Werewolf Society or Organization
  • Known to Human Society
  • Terms and Nicknames – In the Crimson City series werewolves are known as “dogs”.
