Leprechaun Review | 31 Days of Halloween 2017

Leprechaun is a 1993 horror comedy film directed by Mark Jones, starring Warwick Davis and Jennifer Aniston.  It is the first installment in the Leprechaun horror film series and the story follows a vengeful leprechaun who believes a family has stolen his pot of gold.  As he hunts them, they attempt to locate his gold to mollify him.

Positives:

  • Good score

Negatives:

  • Lackluster performances
  • Lackluster characters
  • Poor humor
  • Terribly written story
  • Uninteresting story

Plot:  The plot lacks any kind of originality and what’s worse is, it’s completely predictable and boring.  It is an interesting idea but not an interesting movie.  It lacks urgency, it lacks substance.  The climax was more than pathetic.  (1 out of 5)

Characters:  Tory is a spoiled brat but she does develop as a persona.  Tory and Nathan have this forced crush that is completely rushed.  Nathan is a likable character but comes off as a stereotypical pretty boy with no value of character outside his looks.  Ozzie Jones is not only a lackluster character but a complete idiot.  Every moment he was onscreen my eyes and ears were literally bleeding.  In fact, the group kept tasking this mentally challenged character with the most important stuff when everybody else was more than capable of doing it them self. Alex is a lackluster character and for him to be Nathan’s brother is highly unlikely as the two hardly have any interactions.  It seems more like Alex and Ozzie are brothers.  The Leprechaun is more than entertaining but is just as stupid as the other characters.  Not once in the movie does he actually seem to be motivated by getting his gold back.  Seems more like he loves to play with his chosen victims. (1 out of 5)

Cast:  Davis is the most standout actor but he does tend to phone it in.  Aniston does give an alright performance not really bad but not particularly good.  Aside from Warwick Davis and Jennifer Aniston, the cast includes Ken Olandt, Mark Holton and Robert Gorman. (1 out of 5)

Visuals:  The Leprechaun costume design and make-up looks okay.  The magical effects are dated and look like crap.  Some of the poorest kill sequences ever.  The shop owner’s death was just tragic.  Tragically shot. (2 out of 5)

Score:  Fairly decent score by Christopher Roth.  Does maintain that 80s flair of suspense. (3 out of 5)

Writing:  The directing is absolute trash as well as the script.  Ozzie swallowing the gold coin didn’t make any sense and is highly implausible.  Nathan and Tory are in the basement but the Leprechaun does nothing to entice them but waits til Ozzie gets there.  The film would’ve benefited from just straight horror and not so much comedy.  Most of the comedy is just plain stupid especially with dialogue.  There is also some inconsistencies.  The Leprechaun was able to know that the shop owner had one of his coins but wasn’t able to find the rest of it in the house. (1 out of 5)

The Verdict:  In the end, Leprechaun is literally one of the worst films ever.  Aside from a decent performance by Davis and Aniston, an interesting premise as well as a cool score, the film sucks in every other aspect.  The story is stupid, the characters stupid, the writing pathetic, dumb humor, and the performances just disturbing.  Leprechaun gets 1 out of 5.
