Marvel’s Daredevil (Season 1) Review

Marvel’s Daredevil (Season 1) is a 2015 superhero action crime drama series created by Drew Goddard starring Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Toby Leonard Moore, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Bob Gunton, Ayelet Zurer, Rosario Dawson, and Vincent D’Onofrio. Season one follows Matt Murdock/Daredevil, a lawyer-by-day who fights crime at night and the rise of crime lord Wilson Fisk.

Matt Murdock begins taking justice to the streets as a butt kicking masked vigilante at night but during the day has opened a law firm with his friend, Foggy Nelson.  Matt’s double life is pretty intense as he not only takes down regular gangsters but also takes on the Chinese, Russian mafia, and Yakuza.  Matt’s efforts even force him into conflict with corrupt police officers.

Ben Urich is a very determined journalist at The New York Bulletin.  He not only works with Murdock and Nelson to help them crack their cases but also helps out Murdock’s vigilante persona dubbed “the man in black”.  Urich is probably one of the deepest characters of the show because his role is that of passion.

Wilson Fisk is on the scene manipulating events from behind the scenes.  He does stay silent during the first few episodes but Murdock’s interference forces him to the forefront.  Now, Fisk is definitely a threatening figure but the season does show him as a deep character, especially with his romantic interest with Vanessa Marianna.  He’s torn, he has his own emotional traumas to deal with as well daunting backstory and even his relationships with Vanessa and his right hand, Wesley (who is freaking awesome).  However, the sequence where the guy kills himself for snitching shows just how menacing Fisk is.  Interesting to see how similar the Fisk’s origins are to Murdock’s.
